Be an Uber Unique Indie Scene Teen

Have you ever seen a scene, been in the scene or are the scene? Would you like to know how to be a more laid-back scene, or become an indie scene and gradually work your way up?

Cool, keep reading!

Steps

  1. Get the clothing.
    • Start organizing your clothing. Go through your wardrobe and make three pilesĀ : Keep, Throw Away, Donate to charity or give away. Organize your clothes and be ruthless. If it isn't your style, give it away, if it's trashed, throw it away, if you can work with it, keep it.
    • Once this is done, work with the clothing you do have, organize it into colour, brand or style.
    • Create outfits. Indie scenes usually wear plain skinny jeans with plain converse and hoodies. You may also notice they've taken a little from "prepcore" scene, with dressy shirts, v-necks, chunky jewelry (not the colorful kinds, but the preppy types), and flats or gladiator sandals, Cream, coffee stain and beige colours are very popular as are trench coats, duffle coats and shooting jackets.
    • Don't only shop in stores that are known for scene/indie clothing. Preppy, Gothic, sporty, emo, it doesn't matter. There is bound to be something you can work with in these shops and you will be seen as more unique and un-predictable if you shop at more than just the stereotypical scene stores.
  2. Think about accessories.
    • Shoes. Scene shoes are usually- Chuck Taylor Converse All Stars, Vans, Rabens, Ballet Flats, Skate Shoes (e.g. Globe, Elements), Ugg Boots, Doc Martens but you can wear any type of shoe with the right outfit and it will look scene, even heels which are less common in the scene society.
    • Indie shoes are more or less the same, Converse (the more vintage/old looking the better), Knee high boots, lace up boots, leather shoes etc.
    • Jewelry. Scene Jewelry is usually graphic necklaces, chunky rings in bright colours, spikey 'punk'-ish earrings, gothic necklaces or chokers, anything bright. Bracelets consist of bright plastics like shag bands also known as gummy bands, colourful graphic plastic thick bands that can even be bought from Hot Topic with band names on them and although usually associated with 'Kandi Kids', some scene kids wear Kandi in SMALL amounts. Big, bright sunnies are also very popular.
    • Pearl or stud earrings, vintage/different necklaces, Aviator Sunglasses or Wayfarers, Buddy Holly glasses, many bracelets or things to wear around the wrist such as coloured lace, woolly tights, knee length socks, hair accessories like flowers, big glasses and leather purses/wallets.
  3. Consider your hair. Indie hair is usually very long or very short and is usually kept this way. Scene hair can be any length and is usually layered but can change a lot.
    • Scene hair can be any colour including pinks, purples and blues. The most common scene colours are fiery red, platinum blonde and midnight black. Scene hair is usually teased and can be pulled up for a more casual look. Some ideas are- Side pony tails, braids and plaits, pigtails, pigtail braids, fishtail braids, bright necklaces used as a headband, berets or beanies at the back of the head, hair bows are really important, etc. Search YouTube to find great style ideas.
    • Indie hair can be styled the same way but it is NOT teased. try: Side ponytails and plaits, Messy buns with a scarf behind the ears pushing the front of the hair forward but not quite, a quiff and braids, Hair down, messy and bangs in a twist, Undercuts, Make it look un-brushed but not really knotty, that's ugly and makes you look dirty. "Towel dry" your hair with your fingers when it's dry and maybe run the curlers through a couple of areas to add some wave, Side part it. Wear ribbons in your hair in jewel colours (Dark red, emerald, navy).
  4. Apply makeup. Make-up for both Indie and Scene kids involve foundation, mascara, eyeliner and a bit of eyeshadow. Indie styles of makeup are usually dark but thin. Colours such as browns, greys and blacks are used.
    • Scene makeup is usually more bright and thick. Of course, the usual thick, black makeup is used but scene kids also do colourful makeup. Some style ideas are cheetah patterns, stripes, blends, rainbow runs, colour splashes, paint drips, gore, death doll. YouTube can be a great source for tutorials and hair/makeup help.
  5. Get the attitude. No, we're not saying change yourself, but the scene/indie styles have some attitude attributes that should be noted-
    • Scene- Usually are confident and creative, usually love photography, drawing, making, designing or painting, anything creative works. Most scene kids are noisy and fun to be with, they don't care what anyone thinks and love to be themselves. They are usually bright happy people, even if they are not hyper and overly confident.
    • Indie- Love who you are and be yourself. Tell others what you think and don't be afraid to voice your opinion. Be happy but not overly sad or hyper. The indie style is mature, laid-back. Be yourself while being calm and responsible.

Tips

  • Good places to find those things are in places like Forever21, urban planet, Rue21, Charlotte Russe, Wet Seal, and Maurices. Usually seen as "preppy stores", but well known for indie scenes.
  • Be yourself. Don't just conform to a social group. Labels are for soup cans, and if you want to be a true indie, you have to be an 'indie-pendent' individual. It's alright to be inspired by a certain style, but don't let that change who you are.
  • Being seen does need a lot of commitment to your hair. And yes you should have your own style but scene can be whatever you want scene is a hair cut not a clique you can be who you are and still be scene don't listen to that person that says "be yourself." Your are being yourself. Scene is a style so don't worry your are beautiful no matter what style you like.
