Charge an iPod Shuffle

Your iPod Shuffle is little more than an expensive paperweight if you don’t keep it charged. Luckily, you can charge it on almost any computer or by using a power outlet, and it only takes a few hours to top off. Follow this guide to charge any generation iPod Shuffle.

Steps

Charging a 3rd or 4th Generation Shuffle

  1. Check your battery status. You can check your battery status to see how much charging you’ll need to do. The battery status is indicated by a light code. Check the Tips to see the list of light codes and what they mean. To check your battery status, using the following step for the iPod Shuffle you have:
    • 4th Generation - Press the VoiceOver button twice.[1]
    • 3rd Generation - Quickly switch the iPod shuffle "Off" and "On" again.[2]
  2. Charge your battery using your computer. Plug the USB end of the iPod shuffle USB connector into your computer’s USB port. It must be a high-power USB port; keyboards with USB ports and non-powered USB hubs will not allow charging.
    • Plug the other end of the USB connector into the Shuffle’s headphone jack.
    • Make sure that the computer is turned on and not in Sleep mode.
  3. Charge the battery using the power outlet. If you have an iPod AC adapter, you can charge your Shuffle using the outlet. Plug the USB end of the power adapter cable into the AC power adapter.
    • Plug the 3.5mm plug into the headphone jack of iPod shuffle.
    • Connect the AC adapter to an electrical outlet.
  4. Make sure your connection is good. When an iPod shuffle is charging, the status light will glow orange. When fully charged, the status light will glow green.[3]
  5. You can also use an ipad charger to charge your 3rd generation iPod Shuffle. Take the Ipad charger and pull out the chord by simply pulling on the chord hard, and then take the USB end of the iPod Shuffle charger and plug it in the hole where the iPad charger chord was. Then plug the other end of the iPod Shuffle charger into the iPod.

Charging a 2nd Generation Shuffle

  1. Check your battery status. You can check your battery status to see how much charging you’ll need to do. The battery status is indicated by a light code. Check the Tips to see the list of light codes and what they mean.
    • To check your battery status, turn the iPod shuffle from Off to On, or disconnect it from the computer.
  2. Charge your battery using your computer. Connect the Shuffle Dock to the computer via its USB cable. It must be a high-power USB port; keyboards with USB ports and non-powered USB hubs will not allow charging.
    • Plug the Shuffle into the dock using the headphone jack.
    • Make sure that the computer is turned on and not in Sleep mode.
  3. Charge the battery using the power outlet. If you have an iPod AC adapter, you can charge your Shuffle using the outlet. Plug the USB end of the dock into the AC power adapter.
    • Plug the 3.5mm plug of the dock into the headphone jack of iPod shuffle
    • Connect the AC adapter to an electrical outlet.
  4. Make sure your connection is good. When an iPod shuffle is charging, the status light will glow orange. When fully charged, the status light will glow green.

Charging a 1st Generation Shuffle

  1. Check your battery status. You can check your battery status to see how much charging you’ll need to do. The battery status is indicated by a light code. Check the Tips to see the list of light codes and what they mean.
    • To check your battery status, press the “charging
status” button on the back of iPod shuffle.
  1. Charge your battery using your computer. Remove the cap from the bottom of the shuffle. Plug it directly into your computer’s USB port to charge it. It must be a high-power USB port; keyboards with USB ports and non-powered USB hubs will not allow charging.
    • Make sure that the computer is turned on and not in Sleep mode.
  2. Charge the battery using the power outlet. Plug the iPod directly into the USB receptacle on the other end of the AC power adapter. It can be plugged directly into the adapter, or via an extension cable.
    • Connect the AC adapter to an electrical outlet.

Tips

  • When you perform a battery check of iPod shuffle, the status light has several different indications that indicate what percentage of charge is left. The 3rd and 4th generation iPod shuffles also give you a voice over message telling you the charge in your battery. Here's what the lights mean:
    • Solid green: Good charge (26% to 100%)
    • Solid orange: Low charge (11% to 25%)
    • Solid red: Very low charge (1% to 10%)
    • Blinking red: Almost empty (<1%)
    • No light: No charge (0%)
  • It takes about two hours to charge the battery to 80%, and about four hours for a full charge.

Warnings

  • Make sure your computer is not set to go into sleep mode, as this often cuts power to USB ports.
  • While they look similar, you cannot use a 2nd-generation power adapter cable with a 3rd or 4th-generation iPod shuffle.
  • USB keyboards and non-powered USB hubs, such as those found on monitors, generally do not have USB ports with sufficient charging power. If you connect to a low or non-powered port, your iPod shuffle will not charge. USB ports in a computer, or powered USB hub, generally have sufficient power to charge your iPod shuffle.
