Put Music on iPod Shuffle

Your new iPod Shuffle is designed to constantly surprise you with new tracks, so there are several different ways that you can add tracks to it. The Shuffle is one of the easiest iPods to add music too, as long as you know where to look. See Step 1 below for a few different ways to add music, from random selections to hand-picked playlists.

Steps

Using Autofill

  1. Connect your iPod Shuffle to your computer. iTunes should open automatically if it is already installed. If iTunes is not installed, download it from the Apple website.
  2. Set your Autofill settings. Select your Shuffle in the Devices menu in iTunes. In the bottom-right corner of the iTunes window, click the Settings... button. This will open the Autofill Settings window. You have a few different options to set:
    • "Replace all items when Autofilling" - This will remove everything each time your Shuffle is Autofilled, ensuring that you get new music each time.
    • "Choose items randomly" - This will choose random tracks from the source that you select when Autofilling.
    • "Choose higher rated items more often" - Autofill will favor highly-rated tracks more than others when filling the Shuffle.
    • "Reserve space for disk use" - This slider lets you set aside space on the Shuffle for use as a flash drive. You can use this free space to copy and move other types of files between computers.
  3. Choose your source. After you've set your Autofill settings, you can choose the source of the music that you want to add to your Shuffle. Click the "Autofill From" drop-down menu in the iTunes main window, and select the Library that you want to add music from.
    • If you select "Music", Autofill will pull tracks from your entire music library.
    • You can select any of the playlists you've created, from the music you've purchased from iTunes, or other preset playlists.
  4. Start the Autofill process. Once you've chosen your Autofill source, click the Autofill button on the main iTunes screen. iTunes will begin filling your Shuffle with music tracks. You can monitor the progress in the display at the top of the iTunes window.
  5. Eject the Shuffle. After the Autofill process has completed, you can eject the Shuffle and remove it from your computer. Right-click on the Shuffle in iTunes and select Eject to safely remove it.
    • You can remove the Shuffle when the light on it stops flashing.

Syncing Automatically

  1. Connect your iPod Shuffle to your computer. iTunes should open automatically if it is already installed. If iTunes is not installed, download it from the Apple website.
  2. Select your Shuffle in iTunes. Find your Shuffle in the Devices section of iTunes. Select it, and then click the Music tab.
  3. Turn on music syncing. On the Music tab, check the "Sync Music" box at the top of the page. This will enable music syncing.
  4. Choose what will get synced. There are two basic options for syncing music: "Entire music library" and "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres". If you select "Entire music library", the Shuffle will attempt to fill your device with all of the music in your iTunes library.
    • If you choose "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres", you can use the checklists below to choose which playlists, artists, albums, or genres that you want to sync. Your Shuffle will attempt to fill itself based on these selections.
  5. Start syncing. Click the Apply button at the bottom-right corner of the window to begin the syncing process. You can monitor the sync by looking at the display at the top of the iTunes window.
  6. Eject the Shuffle. After the sync process has completed, you can eject the Shuffle and remove it from your computer. Right-click on the Shuffle in iTunes and select Eject to safely remove it.
    • You can remove the Shuffle when the light on it stops flashing.

Manually Choosing Music

  1. Connect your iPod Shuffle to your computer. iTunes should open automatically if it is already installed. If iTunes is not installed, download it from the Apple website.
  2. Open your Shuffle's Summary page. You can open this by selecting your Shuffle from the Devices section, and then clicking the Summary tab at the top of the window.
  3. Enable manual music. Scroll to the bottom of the Summary tab and check the "Manually manage music" box. This will allow you to choose exactly what goes onto your Shuffle.
  4. Add music to your Shuffle. Find any track, album, artists, or playlist in your music Library. Click and drag your selection directly onto your iPod Shuffle icon underneath the Devices heading.
    • You can remove music from your shuffle by clicking your Shuffle, right-clicking on the music you want to remove, and selecting Delete.
  5. Eject the Shuffle. After you've finished adding the music you want to your Shuffle, you can eject the Shuffle and remove it from your computer. Right-click on the Shuffle in iTunes and select Eject to safely remove it.[1]
    • You can remove the Shuffle when the light on it stops flashing.
