Draw a Bowl of Fruit

Bowls of fruit are seen in almost every museum and given as homework by almost every Arts teacher. And although many say it's just too complicated to draw, it's actually a fairly simple thing.

Steps

  1. Decide on the kind of bowl you want. Will it be as simple as a sphere cut in half or do you wish it to be more complicated? Envision the shape, then draw a basic outline. We'll go with the classic sphere-like shape, elongated into an egg so more fruits can be put in.
  2. Draw the front edge; make it curved. The original edge of the outline now becomes the far edge of the bowl. A sphere would wobble, so make the bottom flat.
  3. Now outline your fruits. Here we have two oranges, a banana and some grapes- other than apples this is the most common setup.
  4. Erase the bottom bowl line and all intersect lines of the bowl and the fruit. Especially mind your grapes- erase the lines at where the berries intersect with each other and carefully decide which berry is on top of which.
  5. Draw a foundation to lose the "floating" look and add any details on your bowl. Add a source of lighting.
  6. Give basic color to the image, and mind that the color of the inner side of the bowl (left of the grapes) is darker than the outer. Use dark colors for the foundation and background to make the bowl and the window stand out.
  7. Shade and light to give your drawing depth. Mind the direction the light is coming from (in our case, the window).
  8. Finished. Now eat up!

Tips

  • If you're doing this in black-and-white, you must pay much more attention to shading.
  • These are just rough sketches showing only the basic steps. Feel free to draw the way you want and change any elements.
  • Make sure each element of your drawing has another which corresponds in color. Here these would be:
  • Also make sure that you have colors which serve as monotony breakers; here they are orange, green, brown and light blue.
  • Add detail to the view out the window: a tree or a bird would work wonders!
  • the bowl, the banana => the sun, the grapes => the background, the window frame => the foundation
