Get Charcoal Instead of Coal in Minecraft
In your first night, a very important item is coal so you can make torches. The problem is that coal is sometimes hard to find at the beginning, so you want an easy alternative.
Steps
- Start your first day like normal, find trees and chop away. The difference is that this time you will need a whole lot more. Around 30 logs should be gathered.
- Make your workbench. Make some planks. Be sure to keep some logs.
- Mine 8 cobblestone and make a furnace. Put the furnace down.
- Put fuel on the bottom (e.g. lava buckets, charcoal, coal, logs) and one regular log on the top of the furnace.
- Pick up your newly-minted charcoal. You will get charcoal, this works exactly like coal but can't be stacked with it .
Tips
- A simple way to getting a full stack of Torches (64 total) is to first acquire 19 Logs. Second, take one log and craft it into planks, giving you 4 Wooden Planks and 18 Logs. Third, place 2 of the Logs in the Smelting Slot of your furnace and 2 Wooden Planks in the Fuel Slot. Wait for the 2 logs to be turned into Charcoal, and then simply move them into the fuel slot. Now that you have 16 Logs and 2 Charcoal total, simply use the 2 Charcoal to smelt the rest of the Logs into even more Charcoal. You will now have 16 total Charcoal, which when combined with 16 Sticks, will give you a full stack of Torches.
- You could never need coal if you keep a tree farm up, always a good thing to have when there is a lack of coal.
- You can use Charcoal as a substitute for a Lava Bucket, if needed.
