Get a Job While You Are in High School

Many students wish to get work experience before entering those vital years in college. Not only do high school jobs look great on a college resume, they make it easier for you to attain college internships and truly prepare you for when you get a job. However, high school jobs aren't easy to secure, as most large companies do not want to take the risk of hiring a high school student. Here are some steps you can take to secure a job while you are in high school.

Steps

  1. If you are looking for a paid or unpaid internship, the best place to start is always at school. Often times guidance counselors know the best place to start your search or they even know of job opportunities appropriate for high school students.
  2. Look online. A good place to start your search is "internships.com" If you are looking for internships abroad, a good place to look at is Asia. Asia is unique and has some of the commercial centers of the world. This will definitely look good on a college resume and give you some new insight into the working world.
  3. Ask your parents, friends and relatives if they know anyone who would like to offer you a job. If your parents or relatives have a family business, you can easily get some work experience in a safe and friendly environment.

Tips

  • Keep an open mind. Sometimes you may start off with a job you don't think you'll like much but you end up loving it. Also if the pay isn't what you wanted, try the job for a while and perhaps if your boss thinks you have worked hard enough you may get a raise.
  • Dress appropriately for the job interview and when applying for the job. You only get one chance to make a first impression and you should give yourself the best shot you have at getting the job over the other candidates.
  • Make sure your parents know of and approve your job. This way they can support you and help you balance things as needed. Assure your parents that you will keep up your grades and activities while you keep up the job.
  • Always request for an interview when possible. This will give your employer a chance to get to know you better and see why you are the best candidate for the job. Also make sure to be honest during the interview. You are a high school student, they don't expect you to have lots of previous job experience, they expect you to be polite and approachable.
