Help Teen Boys Find Good Flexible Part Time Work in Winter

Finding flexible work in winter for teen boys can be difficult in very cold climate zones; many possible food service jobs or cleaning accommodations options shut down or get very quiet over the colder months. This article provides some things to keep in mind.

Steps

  1. Write a functional resume that presents your skills and abilities in a professional context. Focus on outlining you most valuable assets and be sure to make a strong, memorable impression. In addition to explaining what you can do, make sure to clarify specifically how your skill-set would generate value within a particular context. This helps employers visualize your involvement directly and allows them to place you within their organization despite a lack of formal experience. Remember to:
    • Highlight your most relevant skills and accomplishments
    • Be brief and explain exactly how you can help
    • Make sure to proofread your resume
    • Use a professional layout and legible font
    • Be willing to learn and never shy away from an opportunity
  2. Consider manual tasks that might need doing during winter. Good tasks can include:
    • Chopping firewood
    • Farm work
    • House cleaning and chores - Vacuuming, bathroom cleaning, sweeping, dusting, etc
    • Clearing snow from driveways and paths
    • Clearing ice from off the top of cars and car windshields
    • Doing grocery shopping for the elderly
  3. Check the local neighborhood newspaper. Ask around friends, family and trusted neighbors.
  4. Ask any local businesses that might need a part time worker every few days. This can be pretty much in any industry form bakeries, to butchers, to small factories or warehouses; many will take on teenage part time workers for light duties or clean up work every few days or weekends.
  5. Take care in the choices. Be sure you know the people or that they have a trustworthy reputation if your teen boy is working on someone's house/property, or in a local business. Stress the importance of OH&S to your teenagers and visit the business at least once to check on the working conditions if you are concerned.

Tips

  1. "Word of mouth" is always the quickest and easiest way to find jobs, whether it be family, friends, friend of a friend, or local business
  2. Ensure education aways comes first . It is much better for a teenager to lose out on some money working, than it is to have no study time and thus possibly fail a school year, or worst case - not get high enough marks to enter their chosen college/university for their chosen career.
  3. Ensure a safe workplace and safe working conditions, especially in workplaces such as bakeries, butchers, or factories, all of which have machinery not to be operated by young teens, and if misused can cause severe injury or even death.
