Join a Local Mountain Bike Race

Many athletes have trouble finding races to compete in. This article was designed to help you discover new and exciting races to participate in.

Steps

  1. Find a race. Go to nearby bike shops and ask for information about local races, and take brochures if possible. Search online; use words like 'bike race', 'bike trail', 'competition', the name of your town, etc. in your search queries.
    • If you want to do multiple races, consider using a calendar to stay organized and prepared.
  2. Research your race. This includes the location, time, date, weather, sign-ups, cost, rain-date(if one is planned), etc.
    • Include this in your calendar.
  3. Prepare for your race. Gather the necessary equipment, train, and check your bike.
  4. Show up early to the race. Look over the trail, and be sure to register for the race as soon as you arrive.
  5. Race. This is where your training comes in handy! Be cautious on the trail and courteous to other bikers.
    • Be sure to stay hydrated. Before and after the race, drink some water. Just enough to stay hydrated, and not enough to slow you down.

Tips

  • Bring water to the race. Some races may provide water for you, so check on that before you go.
  • Remember to train before your big race; staying in shape and being prepared are essential for your performance.
  • Eat a healthy breakfast.
  • If you're passionate about biking, Start a Club! Contact local bike shops and sport stores to look for an already-organized cub, or gather friends and start your own.
  • If you find a race, invite other bikers or friends you know.
  • Get a good night's sleep the night before the race.
  • You can keep the brochures as mementos, or make a collage out of them if you're feeling creative.

Warnings

  • This sport can get dangerous! Remember to wear a helmet. It can save your life.
  • Stay hydrated during the race.
  • Before your race, be sure to check your bike to see if it's in working condition. You don't want it to break down in the middle of the event!
  • Ask your doctor before beginning any new sports.
