Ride a Skinny on a Mountain Bike

A skinny is a narrow board or log often suspended high above the ground. This skill will help you anywhere.

Steps

  1. Use lumber (2x4, 2x8) to practice. Start off placing the board on the ground and riding down its length without touching the ground with your tires. Only once you have this mastered should you move on to step 2.
  2. Place bricks under the board so that it's 6" above the ground and ride down the boards length over and over.
  3. Raise the board 6" more inches.
  4. Continue raising the board in this manner until you can ride at any height.
  5. Keep on practicing steps 1-2 and then take it to the streets.

Tips

  • Practice
  • Most of riding skinnies is mental, it is easy to ride in a straight line on the ground. But when suspended a few feet about the ground it becomes increasingly difficult. DON'T look down, keep your eyes on the end of the skinny, and don't allow yourself to think about the fall if you mess up.
  • Only move on to the next step once you have the previous one mastered.
