Make Cayenne Pepper
You can make your own cayenne pepper at home if you've had a bumper chilli pepper crop.
Ingredients
- 25g red chilli peppers
- 7.5g salt
Steps
- Buy the peppers from a store or harvest them from your garden.
- Remove the stalks from the chili peppers.
- Dry the chili peppers in a slow oven (around 150ºC, or approximately 300ºF) until crisp. Keep a regular watch on their progress so that you will know when they have dried.
- Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.
- Place in a mortar and pestle with the salt. Pound the chili peppers and salt together until you get a powder.
- Store in an airtight container. Use as required, in recipes that call for cayenne pepper.
Tips
- Remember not to touch your face, especially the eye and mouth areas when making this preparation.
- Keep the oven door closed while cooking.
