Make Hard Chocolate for Ice Cream Topping

You know the old fashioned soft ice cream in a cone that gets dipped in chocolate and turns hard? Now you can make your own at home! It's really simple and delicious.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz of chocolate, milk or dark.
  • 1 T of vegetable shortening, coconut oil, or peanut butter, or half as much vegetable oil

Steps

  1. Melt the chocolate in the microwave for 20 second intervals until it is almost melted.
  2. Add the shortening or peanut butter.
  3. Stir until smooth.
  4. Scoop out ice cream onto ice cream cone.
  5. Dip the ice cream in the melted chocolate and freeze until it hardens or drizzle the chocolate over the ice cream.
  6. Enjoy!

Tips

  • Scoop the ice cream while the chocolate is in the microwave.
  • The shortening thins the chocolate and lowers its melting point, making the coating softer and more flavorful when eaten very cold. Peanut butter or other nut butters work similarly, but also add flavor and a fudge like sort of texture. Vegetable oil can be used in small amounts, but butter sometimes separates.
  • Experiment. You can have it the traditional way, or chocolate ice cream with hardened white chocolate. Maybe both!

Warnings

  • It can get very messy if you screw up. Always have a few paper towels ready.
