Make a Bike Stationary
A stationary bike, also known as a track stand, can have a really big impact on your biking skills. It improves balance, and comes in handy in a lot of situations.
Steps
Slope Method
- Find a slope, with a stable, stationary object close by. (A wheelchair ramp with a rail is a good option.)
- Get on your bike while making sure that the bike's front is facing up the slope. Remain stationary while holding the object (rail).
- Turn the front bars 45 degrees to the right.
- Take the pressure off the hand on the bars. Make sure your pedals are in 3 and 9 position.
- If you start to fall in the direction your wheel is pointing, pedal forward a little to recenter your point of gravity. If you are falling the opposite way, release the pedals to rock back a little.
- Keep trying, rocking backwards and forwards to center the bike.
Flat Ground Method
- Find a flat stretch of ground.
- Put your pedals in a 3 and 9 position. Pedal slightly forward.
- Brake quickly. Use your hands to move your body forward over your handlebars; this has the effect of making your bike rock slightly backward in compensation. This is the same principle which makes a rocket move in a vacuum with fuel. Indeed, a stationary man on a rocket in space, if he has a rock, can make the rocket move in one direction by throwing the rock in another direction, or even moving it in that (opposite) direction.
Tips
- It might help if you got a long pole and balanced it on your hand on its end. Move your hand to balance the pole.
Warnings
- Always wear a helmet.
