Make a Coffee Jelly Frappuccino

Popular in Japan, this delicious frozen drink blends a classic Japanese dessert - coffee jelly, or coffee-flavored gelatin - with cold, creamy, thick Frappuccino®, the drink that helped the Starbucks coffee chain become so popular. For a hot summer day, nothing beats the refreshment that a coffee jelly cappuccino provides.

Ingredients

For the coffee jelly (makes 2 servings):

For the cappuccino (makes 2-4 servings):

  • 1 1/2 cups strong coffee
  • 2 cups low-fat milk
  • 4 cups ice
  • Sugar to taste (around 4 tablespoons suggested)

Steps

  1. Prepare double-strength coffee.
    • Espresso works the best for this recipe; however, if it's not available, you could always brew regular coffee using twice the normal amount of grounds.
  2. Pour into your favorite mug and cover with plastic wrap.
  3. Chill in the freezer.

Prepare the coffee jelly

  1. Mix the gelatin powder with 2 tbsp of water.
  2. Make coffee. This is different than the coffee made previously, which should be sitting in the freezer while you make the jelly. If you want extra flavor, try making espresso and mixing it with regular coffee in a 1:1 ratio. Or, you could use solely espresso.
  3. Combine the coffee you just made along with the gelatin-water mixture and sugar in a saucepan.
  4. Stir the coffee mixture over low heat, until the sugar is totally dissolved.
  5. Pour the coffee mixture into a bowl.
  6. Chill until firm.
    • It's recommended to wait until the coffee jelly is totally Be Firm on What You Say (about 2 hours or so). If you're thirsty and don't feel like waiting, you can take it out when it is at a jelly-like consistency (about an hour and a half).
  7. Dice the coffee jelly (if it's totally firm) into quarter-inch cubes, or to your liking.
  8. Pour the cubes into two tall glasses.

Prepare the final drink

  1. Take the coffee out of the freezer after it has been totally chilled (around an hour and a half to two hours).
  2. Pour the coffee, milk, ice, and sugar into a large blender.
  3. Blend the ingredients on high until the ice has been crushed.
    • If your blender has an "ice-crush" mode, use it!
  4. Puree the ingredients until smooth.
  5. Pour over the coffee jelly and top with whipped cream.
  6. Enjoy your refreshing drink!

Tips

  • You could use this recipe to make just the coffee jelly or just the cappuccino! Both are good by themselves!
  • It's really best to wait until the coffee jelly is totally firm! Be patient!

Warnings

  • As with anything involving heat, be careful not to burn yourself while handling hot coffee!
