Make a Water Flower from a Plastic Bag and Straw

"Suichuka" is an artificial flower which opens when immersed in water. The flower seems to bloom and has a Venetian glass appearance due to the lens effect of the water. This used to be a summer ornament in ancient Japan, but you can make your own using household materials.

Steps

  1. Cut the handles off a plastic bag.
  2. Cut the bag open and flatten it out.
  3. Fold and cut the bag as follows:

    • Fold the bag into a rectangle, approximately {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} x 30cm (6" x 12") in size.
    • Fold the bag three more times and cut it lengthwise, adding an extra {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} to the radius (and the size) of the flower you want to make.

    • Make a fringe with many thin slits, the same length as the radius of the flower.
  4. Open.
  5. Color the bottom half of the slits.
  6. Gather like an accordion.
  7. Tie using a fishing line. Make sure you leave a good length of fishing line attached to the flower. You'll need it later.
  8. Cut a piece of a plastic straw as shown in the pictures.
  9. Open like a star.
  10. Pull the flower you made earlier through the straw. Pull it by the fishing line.
  11. Attach a weight.
  12. Put it in the water.

Tips

  • Adjust the length of the stem to the depth of the vase.

Variations
