Make a Paper Napkin Flower With a Plastic Straw
Here is a creative way to decorate a dinner table or party with candy or chocolate, using simple materials you can find around the house!
Steps
- Cut the end of a straw past the bending part. Make multiple cuts in the bending section as shown.
- Curl the cut pieces outwards with your fingernail.
- Wrap candy pieces in foil or plastic wrap, as shown.
- Unfold a napkin so that it forms a single layer. You may also need to cut it so that it sits square.
- Fold the napkin as shown in this diagram.
- Fold in half.
- Fold in half again.
- Fold in half, diagonally. The square you have in front of you has four edges. Two adjacent edges are folded, and two adjacent edges are not. Once you have made the diagonal fold, bring the two folded edges together, and the two unfolded edges together.
- Fold again, as shown. The folding line goes from the midpoint of the unfolded edges to the opposite point of the triangle.
- Cut the shape of the petal.
- Unfold.
- Pinch the center and twist, then untwist gently.
- Make a single cut from the edge to the center (the radius).
- Put a candy in the center and wind lightly.
- Twist the center firmly. Put it in a stem of a straw, and twist hard so that it goes in like a screw.
- Finished!
Tips
- You can make this into a complete bouquet for a present.
- You can try different colors of napkins to make the flowers look beautiful.
- When wrapped in foil, the shiny presentation is very eye-catching.
- Instead of cutting your own napkin, you can sometimes find napkins that are already cut in a suitable pattern.
- You can skip wrapping the candy and soak the flower in scented oil instead, and display it in the room. It will give off a fragrance and can produce a relaxing effect.
- If you have a mild cold, soak the flower in eucalyptus oil and put it on a bedside table. It's good for your respiratory system.
- One idea is to seal up the end of the plastic straw and put aroma oil in it with a syringe. The fragrance continues for longer. For details on sealing the end of the straw, see Make Floating Hearts from Plastic Straws.
Warnings
- Do not ingest it.
- Avoid humidity and heat.
- Do not display it for a long time.
