Make a Flower Accessory Using Straws
Make a flower from straws which you can then use to decorate items such as hairclips, brooches, treasure boxes etc. Use different colored straws to create different colored flowers. Combine different sized straws to make larger shaped petals.
Steps
- Cut {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} from a plastic drinking straw. You need to cut six pieces of the straw. Each piece needs to be the same size with even edges. Arrange them into the shape of flower; put one in the center and five surrounding it. With larger straws, pinch one side to form a teardrop shaped petal.
- Put the cut straw pieces on a cookie sheet. You need a level surface to place the straw pieces on for the next step.
- Place a tea towel or a thin piece of fabric over the straws. You can use wax paper, as shown in the photo if you do not have a tea towel or fabric. Iron on low heat for a few seconds. This will melt the ends of the straw pieces together.
- Turn over the straw flower and iron it for another few seconds. Check both sides to make sure the ends are fused together. You will have a little decoration made of straws.
- Attach your decoration with glue to a hairpin, earrings or necklaces. Turn your flower into a magnet for your fridge. Have fun and make flowers in different colors!
Tips
- You don't have to make a flower. Be creative and arrange them into other shapes. Be original and make a straw masterpiece!
- You can use different colored straws. Mix or match the colors to suit your taste!
Warnings
- Do not let small children use an iron without adult supervision.
- Take care when turning the straws over, to iron the other side.
