Not Go Insane when Having a Crush

For most people, having a crush is a great, rewarding and energizing experience. However, for others, having a crush means that the brain shuts down, and what remains is a romanticizing, pitiful pile of yearning emotions. Even worse, some people get sad for no reason when they have a crush. This is normal and due to the hormones that flood our brain, when we have a crush.

This article helps you to cope with having a crush, so that you can stay productive, upbeat, rational and healthy. This article is all about (temporarily) forgetting the person you have a crush on, and working on yourself. If you want to know how to act towards, and win over your crush, this is not the right article. For that, check out How to Deal With a Crush. However, if you have a very intense crush, you should first create this active lifestyle, before even starting to hint at your crush what's going on.

Steps

  1. Be Active! Don't watch TV. Don't sit around doing nothing. Do something you love, like reading, baking cookies or drawing. Having a crush doesn't mean you have to mope around.
  2. Do Sports. It doesn't matter what. Bike. Run. Swim. Play Laser-Tag, Tennis or Soccer. Whatever gets you active and excited.
  3. Be Social. Tell your friends that you need the distraction. Meet some friend(s) every day. Should you talk with them about your crush? This differs from person to person. You might want to find a good mix, talk about your emotions and then move on to some other topics.
  4. Don't spend too much time by yourself.
  5. Focus. On your career/studies/community obligations.

Advanced

  1. Get yourself together. When doing things where you need to focus, do not allow yourself to daydream away to your crush. This may be more likely to work, if you - at more suitable occasions - allow yourself to spend some time to think about and rationalize your crush. In any case: you're in control of your thoughts!
  2. Think about the larger picture. Think back to before you had the crush: What occupied your mind? Which dreams, visions, goals did you want to focus on? It's time to refocus on your goals and plans. Remember, your crush has never been part of those plans in the past - and this has not changed! Do not change any of your plans due to a crush. Instead, now it's even more the time to invest your time into your dreams.
  3. Flirt. In some cases, innocent flirting with people other than your crush, can take your mind off your crush a bit and help you realize that the world is full with beautiful people, rather than just one beautiful person. Be careful - if your crush sees you flirt with other people, this may be a turnoff. However, if you flirt in a truly innocent and positive way (friendly flirting) - which is a great skill to have -, this may make you look more attractive.
