Pass the Arkansas Driving Skills Test

Learning to drive may seem like a piece of cake to the average Joe. Some parents even opt to enroll their kids into driving school after a few prior failed attempts. The ideal age for learning to drive is roughly 15 to 16 years old. However, there is no right or wrong age, only a right and wrong way to be a safe driver.

Steps

  1. Once you enter your vehicle first place your key in the ignition; or if you have a "push to start" option you'll want to press the brakes and button simultaneously.
  2. Put on your seatbelt. Make sure all of your passengers also have on their seatbelts. Safety is always first!
  3. Adjust your rearview mirror so that you can comfortably see what is happening behind you.
  4. Adjust your side-view mirrors. Make sure that you're able to see what's happening in your blind spots on both sides of the car.
  5. Place your vehicle into "R" or reverse if you are backing out of a space. With an automatic transmission; you will put your foot on the brake and move the gear shifter to R at the same time.
  6. Make sure you check your rearview mirror for any oncoming traffic or pedestrians.
  7. Slowly release the brake and turn your steering wheel to the right or left, depending on which direction you wish to turn. If you wish to turn right, your vehicle will go left. Likewise, if you turn left, your vehicle will turn right.
  8. Once you have completely backed out of the parking space lightly press your foot on the gas to accelerate.
  9. Driving in parking lots or neighborhoods, make sure that you are driving cautiously and slowly to avoid any pedestrians. Be aware of any speed limits.
  10. Be sure to follow ALL traffic signs. You'll see signs such as the stop sign, yield sign, speed limit, or even when you're entering a school zone. You don't want to be stopped by a police officer or even a motorcycle cop.
    • Once you've mastered driving the streets, you'll drive on the interstates/highways at a much higher speed. The max speed for streets in Arkansas is typically 65-70 mph. To accelerate, you will always press the gas. To decelerate, you pick your foot up from the gas and let the speed drop naturally or you can gently press the brakes.
