Pedal While Standing on a Bicycle

Pedaling while standing on a bicycle is not only cool but it will also allow you to put down a lot more power for climbing hills for example. Getting out of the saddle also makes your body use different muscles for pedaling, which is helpful for managing fatigue when riding long distances.

Steps

  1. Start pedaling normally while sitting down.
  2. Next as you gain speed and are comfortable stand up gradually while still pedaling.
    • As you practice, try to make the transitions between riding positions as smooth as possible.
  3. Hold onto the handle and go faster as you get comfortable.
  4. Pull up on the handlebars for more leverage and power. Obviously check to see if your handlebars are loose prior to riding.
  5. Lean the bike from side to side as you pedal. The advantage of this is again leverage and power.
  6. It's as simple as that.

Tips

  • Always watch where you are going.
  • Practice!
  • Know your limits.
  • Be sure your feet are planted well on the pedals and you are holding onto the handlebars tightly.
