Prepare for a Job Search After a Long Unemployment
So you haven't been employed in a while. It could be for a myriad of reasons, but the fact remains, when we aren't working, we don't stay at our most professional (image wise). This article hopes to get you on the right track.
Steps
- Make sure that any legal 'issues' are gone. About the worst place that you can find that you have a warrant over you or are considered a very bad risk to employ is when you are looking for a job.
- Shave... or at the very least, trim the beard in a more tidy fashion.
- If you are a female, consider waxing if you have a lot of facial hair. At least for the interviews.
- Style your hair. Leave it long if you want, but at least make it look tidy.
- Do a credit check on yourself. Most places are using a person's history when they are deciding to hire someone. Even the best potential employee can have had some credit issues, so don't let it happen.
- Look over your wardrobe. Is it appropriate for the job you are searching for? You don't want to just have nice clothes for the interview, but ones for after you get hired.
- Find a way to explain the employment gap. Why you weren't working is as important as how you did your jobs while working.
- Be unique. Try to be unique, stand out from other people. Make your resumé stand out, add a touch of yourself. If you look for work as a designer add a design or color. Record a video message about yourself that you can add to your resumé, make sure to make it perfect and make sure to look good when you record the message.
- Ask people in your network. Ask people in your network if they know people who are offering jobs you are interested in.
- Talk with a career adviser. Go and talk with a career adviser. This person can give you specific instructions and advice about pursuing a certain job.
