Ride a Tandem Bike with a Child

Now that you have successfully gotten your child to ride a bike you can know move on to the next step of bike training: learning to ride a tandem bike.

Steps

  1. Make sure that your child can properly ride and balance on a single seat bike.
  2. Place the child on the rear seat as this will allow them to focus only on pedaling and balancing for the first couple times.
  3. With the parent or responsible adult in the front seat begin slowly to ride the bike as the child will need to get used to pedaling in sync with another person.
  4. Walk the child through the steps and tell them what you are doing so that the feel safe and secure behind you. Finally as your child becomes more confident riding behind you allow them to move to the front and take control of the bike.

Tips

  • Don't force the child into the bike, teach them as you did when they first learned to ride a bike.
  • Try to come up with a pattern for them to follow while pedaling so that they can get in sync with you, the rider,
  • Explain what is in front of you the first couple trips because the child won't be able to see the front and my become scared and confused.

Warnings

  • Always wear helmets when riding a bike especially when the child is new to a tandem bike for they may fall over while learning.
