Sell RVs

If you're hoping to sell an RV, the first step is making the RV look as presentable as possible. Clean the interior and exterior of the RV, and fix any broken appliances or small issues the RV might have. Decide on a price for your RV that lets you earn some money off of it while still competing with other RVs that are for sale. To market the RV, post its information on RV-specific sites, use social media, or post a "For Sale" sign on it to attract attention.

Steps

Fixing up the RV

  1. Clean the interior and exterior of the RV. Use cleaning wipes or a cleaning spray to wipe down everything inside of the RV, such as counters, appliances, and windows. Use a broom or vacuum to get rid of any dirt and dust on the floors and seats.[1]
    • Give the RV’s exterior a good cleaning using a hose and soap to make sure it’s looking its best.
    • Use a deodorizing spray to get rid of any unwelcome scents.
  2. Repair any broken appliances or other damages. If anything in your RV (or on the outside) needs fixing, now is the time to do it before potential buyers come to look at it. These could be things like a loose or squeaky door hinge, or a light bulb that needs to be replaced.[2]
    • It helps to walk through your RV and pretend that you’re the one buying it, looking for anything someone might want fixed.
  3. Bring the RV into a licensed technician to be inspected. This ensures that your RV is up-to-date on any maintenance that it needs to be done and is in pristine condition to sell. Schedule a time to bring your RV in to have things like the brakes, transmission fluid, and battery checked, making sure they change the oil too.[3]
  4. Increase the value of the RV by adding accessories. While this isn't necessary, it's a great way to improve the look of the RV and encourage potential buyers to pay more for it. These could be things like placemats, small rugs, or cookware. Situate the items in the RV so that they’re noticeable, showing potential buyers that your RV has additional items that other RVs might not come with.[4]
    • Other additional item ideas include a cooler, cutting boards, sports equipment, or a radio.
  5. Gather all of the paperwork together for the future owners. Pull together all of the manuals that go to the appliances and accessories in the RV, as well as the user manual for the actual RV. Place these things with the title to the RV and any other essential paperwork that came with the RV when you bought it so that everything is in one place for the new buyer.[5]
    • It’s a good idea to make a list of all the maintenance that the RV had done while you owned it, putting this list with the other paperwork.
    • Store the paperwork in a protective file folder to make sure it doesn’t get lost or damaged.

Setting a Price

  1. Calculate a rough estimate for the resale price using the amount you paid as a base. Use the amount you originally paid for the RV as a starting point for how to choose a current selling price. It’s unlikely that your RV will sell for as much as you originally paid for it due to normal wear and tear, as well as the age of the vehicle. Come up with a price that allows you to make some profit while also competing with other similar RVs that are for sale.[6]
    • The easiest way to find out what your RV is currently worth is by doing some research online.
  2. Compare prices online to see what others are selling. Go to specific websites that are used to compare the prices of RVs, or do a generic online search by typing the make, model, and year of your RV into a search engine to see what it’s currently worth. Write down the different prices, as well as what each RV offers, so you’ll be able to come up with a more accurate price for your own.[7]
    • The National Automobile Dealers Association is a good source for figuring out how much your RV might be worth.
    • Look on Craigslist to see how other sellers are pricing their RVs.
  3. Ask a company for an appraisal for a second opinion. Places such as insurance companies and banks can often look at your RV and tell you roughly how much money you can get for it. Another option is taking your RV to an RV dealer and asking them for an appraisal.[8]
    • Consider having several different companies appraise your RV to compare the prices.
    • Be aware that you may have to pay a fee for an appraisal, depending on the company.
  4. Decide on a price range that's reasonable to sell your RV. It’s likely that a potential buyer might try to haggle the price down when they’re looking at your RV, so be prepared to get a little less than fair market value. After calculating a fair price, add and subtract a little bit (a few hundred dollars, for example) to come up with an acceptable range.[9]
    • For example, if the fair market value of your RV is $5,000, and you'd like to sell it for that, your range for an acceptable offer might be anywhere from $4,500 to $5,500.
  5. Settle on the lowest offer you would accept for your RV. It’s helpful to know exactly where you’d draw the line if someone makes you an offer below asking price. Once you've decided on the amount of money you'd like the RV to sell for, decide a worst-case scenario. Choose the lowest price that you would accept that would still leave you with a little profit.[10]
    • If you're not worried about making a profit and just want to sell the RV to pay for all the money you've put into it, your price can be lower.

Marketing the RV

  1. Put a “For Sale” sign on the RV for local passersby to see. If possible, park your RV in a spot that gets a lot of traffic. Position a “For Sale” sign inside the RV’s windows so that they’re visible from the street, letting people know that your RV is on the market.[11]
    • Write your phone number in clear lettering on the sign so people know how to contact you.
    • Consider putting signs on different angles of the RV, such as the front windshield, side windows, and on the very back.
    • Make your own “For Sale” sign, or buy one that’s pre-made at a big box store.
  2. Take high-quality photos of your RV to use for marketing. This is especially important if you’re posting your RV for sale online, but it’s also good to have photos if you’re marketing your RV other places. Use a quality camera to take the pictures if possible, taking them from many different angles in your RV. Take pictures of the exterior of the RV, showing all of the sides, and then snap pictures of the inside of your RV to show off the details.[12]
    • Aim to take 20-30 photos throughout the photographing process.
    • Take the photos in the middle of the day to benefit from the natural sunlight.
  3. Post about the RV in your local newspaper or magazine. Take out an ad in your local paper telling everyone that you have an RV for sale, or see if you can get it printed in a local magazine. Send the newspaper or magazine pictures of your RV for them to use if they’d like.[13]
    • Call your local newspaper or magazine to ask them about taking out an ad, or email them to ask your questions.
  4. Use social media to reach a wider audience. Post your RV for sale on Facebook Marketplace, posting several quality pictures to show people what it looks like. Consider posting your RV for sale on Instagram and Twitter as well, or simply let people know that you’re selling an RV if you don’t want to officially post all of the information.[14]
    • Post a picture of your RV on Instagram, with the tag #RVforsale to catch people’s attention.
  5. List your RV on websites that specialize in RVs. These include websites like RV Trader or RVT.com. On these websites, you plug in information, such as the make, model, and year of your RV. Anyone who visits this site looking for an RV will have access to your listing.[15]
    • Camping World or eBay Motors are other sites you might use.
    • Use multiple quality pictures so people can see the inside and outside of the RV.
  6. Hang flyers in local RV spots to target a specific audience. Print out flyers that have a picture of your RV on them, along with necessary details such as information about the RV, how much you’re selling it for, and who to contact if they’re interested. Hang these flyers in parks and campgrounds to reach people that are more likely to be interested in purchasing an RV.[16]
    • Consider hanging flyers in places like libraries, coffee shops, or on local community bulletin boards to reach even more people.
  7. Post an ad on Craigslist selling your RV. Visit the Craigslist website and create an ad for your RV. Post several pictures of the exterior and interior, and list the amenities the RV comes with. Adding as much information about the RV to your post as possible will make it easier for potential buyers to get an accurate idea of what your RV is like.[17]
    • Set your location when you post the ad so people know which area they’ll need to visit to see the RV in person.
    • Make sure you include the price in your post.
  8. Visit an RV dealer to have them sell it for you. Do a quick online search to find RV dealers near you. Call the dealer to schedule a time for you to bring your RV in for them to check out and go over the details of selling it to a dealer with you.[18]
    • If you choose this method, you need to be okay with accepting a lower deal so the dealership will make money off of your RV.
