Remove a Radio from a Ford Truck

You may sometimes want to replace a radio or remove it all together. Either way, this article will help you.

Steps

  1. Know what year the truck is. If it is from the year 1940 to 1979, the radio is probably easy to remove. If it is from 1980 through 1996, it may be more difficult. Recent models may need to be done by a professional; they require certain tools that you may not have. If you're not sure of the year, look at the owner's manual, which should have the model year on the front. Some owner's manuals contain a section on removing the radio, which can be very helpful.
  2. Figure out which tools you'll need. Below, we give you a list of things that may be needed, but some models may be different.
  3. Pull the knobs from the holder. Pull the back part of the knob. Put these in a safe place if you plan to reuse them.
  4. Remove the two or four screws from the faceplate using your screwdriver.
  5. Pull the faceplate off the radio. Do this carefully with your hands, no tools. The radio and dial hands should be exposed.
  6. Turn the two nuts that hold the dial/knob arms in place using your socket and ratchet. The nuts need to come completely off the knob arms. Once they are off, put them in a safe place to reuse them. After this you can
  7. Take the radio out. Take it out from the front or back, depending which model you have. Coming out from the back can be tricky. Be careful to avoid damaging the radio or any other components.
    • If you need to take it out from the back, you may need to remove a bolt that is on the bottom.
  8. Pull apart the plug if there is one. Once the radio is removed from the dash, the wires will be exposed. If it's a plug, pull it apart. If not, cut the wires so that you have lots of wire to tie back together when you put the radio back in.
  9. Pull the black antenna wire from the back or side of the radio. Your radio is removed.
