Transfer Files from iPod to a New Computer Without the Old Computer

Transferring files to a new computer using an iPod can be quite complicated, especially when the old computer is not available. Follow these steps for a solution to transferring files on Windows.

Steps

  1. Make sure your iPod is set up for disk use. You can do this by following this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1478
  2. Open My Computer.
  3. Find your iPod under the list of drives.
  4. Get to Options.
    • On Windows Vista, go to Organize.
    • On Windows XP, go to Tools (at the top).
  5. Select the View tab at the top.
  6. Select Show Hidden Folders.
  7. Open the folder entitled iPod_Control, located on the iPod drive
  8. Go into the Music folder.
  9. Select all of the folders in it, and select Copy from the Organize menu.
  10. Paste the files into your iTunes folder.
  11. After the transfer completes, re-install iTunes. Once you see your files in iTunes, it is safe to sync your iPod.

Tips

  • These instructions will only work for click wheel iPods such as iPod Classic, iPod Nano etc. If you have an iPod Touch or an iPhone, you will not be able to put your device into disk use mode - this is an Apple limitation. In this case, you will need third party software to put your device into disk use mode or copy your iPod content straight into iTunes.
  • Once you have copied the files on to your new computer and re-open iTunes, you will need to import the folder to the Library (option under File). In order for this to work, make sure that the folder is not hidden (right click on folder and uncheck box under Attributes)
  • Check every so often to make sure the files are transferring to the right place.

Warnings

  • You will need to keep your iPod plugged for quite a while, possibly more than an hour. Do not attempt this if you do not have the time to part with your iPod.

Things You'll Need
