Write a Poem from the Heart

Poems are great means of expressing emotion. You can use it for various things, like getting a good grade in literature class, exchanging poems to your friends, and telling a person you love how you feel in a more romantic way...

Steps

  1. Get to a place where you feel aroused. The more aroused and alone you are, the easier you’ll be able to pour your heart out. Make sure it is quiet and calm so you are able to think. If possible, go to a location that brings up meaningful memories, as these can make a poem much more heartfelt, since it comes from your own experiences. Pay your full attention to writing and listen to the quietness of nature.
  2. Pick up your pencil and paper and start “pouring your heart out”. Think about what’s in your heart and which emotion are you going to write.
  3. Write everything that’s in your heart. It could be a name, an activity, a memory, a place. It could be anything as long as it holds meaning to you. Just pour your heart out and write plenty of words onto the paper, nonstop. Whatever word pops into your head, jot it down. This will be a guide to what your real poem will be like.
  4. Once you pour your heart out, start making the poem. By using your feelings that you wrote on the paper, begin constructing the poem by simply using your creativity. You may want to only write two lines, a whole verse, or even ten! Just convert what you feel into words in the poem (a poem is what you make of it, but there are “rules” that will make a poem much like a “professional” poem). These words could be the spark you need for your poem. Whether these words are inspiration or the subject of your poem, make the most out of it.
  5. Read it again. Check for possible typos, words that don’t feel right, or any other changes to your poem. To enhance your poem give it descriptive and powerful words. Read it many times, and feel those words that you have written.
  6. Finalize. When you’re happy with it, your poem is done. You can keep it, send it, e-mail it, whatever you want with it. Keep doing like this, may make you a poet because a good poet feels her poetry! and if you felt once correctly you might be successful in writing poem.

Tips

  • Doodling. Adding doodles adds to the “from the heart” feel. The reader is also stimulated by illustrations of your poem.
  • A good location is key. If you’re going to write a love-poem, try writing on your bed with a photo of “him”/”her” . If you’re going to write a dark-poem, try in a silent and private room. If you’re going to write a nature-poem, try writing it outdoors.
  • If nothing's coming for you, wait. You could wait an hour, a day or as long as it takes.
  • No erasers needed. Don’t fuss yourself with erasing, just cross it with your pen/pencil or get a fresh piece of paper. Otherwise, you’ll be so frustrated about erasing that you lose your emotions.
  • Inspiration really helps. Get inspired by looking through photos, listening to music, or look for famous poems from the internet.
  • Too much of something is bad. Sometimes a very long poem makes the reader bored. Keep it to the point, and don't add fluff or unnecessary words just to make it seem longer.
  • There’s a difference between draft and the real thing. You can write your emotions on a piece of notebook paper, but the real poem should be written on a fresh piece of paper. You can even type it on your computer and save as a document.
  • You can make your poem in whatever form you write best in. It could be a haiku, a couplet, or free verse. Rhyming is not necessary to boost the quality of your poem- some of the most powerful poems are free verse.

Warnings

  • Sometimes, a love poem will creep the recipient out. Be careful who you send them to!
  • Poems are not magic! They can’t instantly get you a girl/guy (if you’re writing a love poem). Love-poems are a kind of “icebreakers” for the “next step”.
  • Don't ever give an embarrassing love poem away. Someone might be mean and pass it around your school/office/wherever.
