Be Mature in Middle School

It's official: you're out of elementary school and not a child anymore. No more getting away with being obnoxious! Dang. How do you behave accordingly and with etiquette? With a few tips and tricks, you'll be confident, organized, and mature. But are you ready?!

Steps

  1. Have a great attitude. Be confident and believe in yourself. Tell yourself that you're smart, pretty, or whatever great attribute you have. Don't be conceited about your great attributes, though; that is considered immature.
  2. Be confident about who you are. Walk with your head held high and even put a little spring in your step. Act as if you know where you're going and as if you need to get there quickly. Not only will this make you look more mature, it'll make you less vulnerable to bullies.
  3. Be positive. If you want to get along with people, nothing succeeds more than being happy and polite all the time. No one wants to be around someone who complains, is grumpy or depressed or puts down on other people.
  4. Dress the part; try to dress in a fashion that won't offend anyone but still allows you to be you. Consider wearing clothes that make you seem more mature and "professional". Avoid the suit and tie, but stay away from the cartoon t-shirts, find a happy medium that fits you. There are lots of fashion blogs you can look at to get an idea of what's fashionable.
  5. Laugh if you need to or if there's a joke, but don't laugh excessively. There's a fine line between laughing hard at something and laughing inappropriately, it will make you look like you're five. Bite your tongue if you have to. Once you stop, fiddle with your backpack strap or locker to keep from laughing again. If you have trouble finding the fine line of laughter, take the safe approach and not laugh at all. You can always play the situation as being "too mature" for the humor or not understanding it. Also, don't forget that just a simple smile will do as well to acknowledge a joke, it's also much less obnoxious in class.
  6. Try harder to keep up grades and study harder. This will make you more mature, and help you prepare for high school and college.
    • Study groups are also great for meeting people, but don't make the primary purpose socializing.
  7. Don't try to get too much attention. Don't do stupid things to get attention, because it's really annoying. For example, don't act crazy and jump around in the mall and wear "over-done" clothes so that people look at you; it is not pleasing to look at. Act like you have dignity and common sense.
  8. Don't do at school, what you wouldn't do at home. It's never okay to be someone totally different at school than at home.
    • For example, if you wouldn't cuss at home, don't cuss at school. (Besides, swearing is banned in most schools.)
  9. Always be neat and organized with your binder. A messy binder can make you seem immature.
  10. Redo your room. Go through all those old clothes you loved in 3rd grade, and only keep the ones you will actually wear. Go through your dressers, cabinets, and drawers. Throw out or give away as much as you can. Repaint your room a more sophisticated color like white, gray, or beige. Buy some new, bigger, and better furniture. This room will now be fully updated! You will definitely feel much more mature and like a better you.
  11. Learn some new words. This may sound boring or ridiculous, but mixing in a few complex words like "oblivious" or "incredulous" to your vocabulary will make you seem older. Also, avoid using filler words such as "um" or "like." Instead of saying a subject is "like" another, say "it's similar to." When your friends don't understand your vocabulary, you'll feel like the most mature one in the room.

Tips

  • Learn new things. Be organized and well behaved.
  • Don't go up to people and brag to them about things, including your boyfriend/girlfriend. This will just make you look immature in the moment.
  • Don't interrupt the teacher when she is talking to the class. Don't raise your hand and shout out, "Mr. or Mrs. So-and-So, I have a question..." and do not blurt out your question unless he or she calls on you.
  • Don't forget to have fun with your look and attitude.
  • If you are sitting next to someone and they have a headache, try to talk a little bit more quietly so that you don't make their headache worse. Also, be sure not to tap your pencil on the table, especially when someone at the table or desk has a headache.
  • Practice controlling your laughter; some people are amazed if you can stop laughing on a moment's notice.
  • Don't act crazy or make up gross jokes or comments.
  • Don't go up to people and tell them they have more friends/you have more friends than them.
  • Have good hygiene. Brush your teeth and take a shower every morning.
  • Respond quickly to a question like you know that and more.

Warnings

  • Don't change yourself for anyone else.
  • If your crush doesn't like you back, be mature about it. Besides, it's his/her loss, not yours.
  • When around your crush, laugh once or twice when they tell a joke - no more than that.
  • If you spill the beans about a crush to someone and he/she tells someone else, don't get mad at him/her. It just shows how immature you are. Just act like nothing had happened and don't make a big deal about it. Also don't get mad if your crush is talking to your friend and not you; that is another way to show you are immature.
