Be a Successful Merchant in Maplestory

Merchanting in MapleStory is a good way to earn Money Management for Young People for rare items such as Zakum Helmets, equipment with rare or legendary potential and the most recent chairs from the Gachapon. No matter if you are a new player or a veteran, you can be a successful merchant, even with a beginner's weapon.

Steps

Preparation

  1. Reach level sixteen, if you haven't already. This is the requirement to buy Store Permits and Hired Merchants. If you're new to MapleStory, head over to Make a Master Bowmen in Maple Story to train on Blue Mushrooms. You'll earn money from training there because the mushrooms drop Bento Boxes, which can be sold to an NPC for 1k.
  2. Get a Store Permit or a Hired Merchant. You can go to the Cash Shop and buy one. If you don't have NX, do some surveys and offers on the Nexon website or sell items on MTS until you have at least 1,800 NX.
    • Hired Merchants are useful if you are going to get grounded, you have an unstable Internet that is weak, you're going on a holiday, or you don't have access to MapleStory often. You can get it for around 1,000 NX per day and you can buy more than 1 at a time.
    • Regular Store permits are perfect for new merchants and players with a stable Internet. The permits cost 1,800 NX for 3 months (20 NX per day, have 16 slots). Holiday Store Permits are 3,600 NX for 3 months and they have 24 item slots.

Stocking Items for your Store

  1. Stock up on items. You can't have a store without items! You can hunt monsters for Hidden Potential items, do Be Good at Adventure Quest for items and money, buy scrolls from people, and if you had done The Fallen Woods Quest, you can buy All Cures, Icicles, Return to NLC Scrolls, and Diamond Arrows. Jane's quests can give you GFA scrolls 60% that you can sell for ten to fifteen million.
  2. Take advantage over your profession. If you are level thirty or higher, you can learn a professions and sell your creations.
    • With Herbalism, you can manufacture herb and flower oils to sell to lazy alchemists. You can also merchant Herb Roots and get free herbs when you collect one hundred Herb Roots. If you stumble upon a Golden Herb, harvest it! Rarely, Primal Essence, that can sell up to one hundred fifty million may drop.
    • Get Into Mining in RuneScape is one of the most popular professions. The most popular minerals are Gold, Bronze, Diamond, Garnet, Mithril, and Adamantium. You can trade in one hundred Ore fragments for seven random ores. Just like Golden Herb Roots, Primal Essence drops from Heart Stones.
    • Smithing lets you create weapons and armor for yourself and other people. Some of the most profitable items are androids (Female ones are more profitable, since a lot of players wants girls following them), throwing stars, and most of the level 120+ items.
    • Duct Tape Crafts lets you sell accessories. This is the most profitable professions, as you can make from one million (for an earring with 3% of any stat) to around two billion (for an earring or pendant with Legendary Potential that has 36% luck or all stats combined) Most players love to make Half Earrings for potential and sell them in the Free Market for up to seven hundred fifty million mesos, and drop or fuse the ones without potential.
    • Alchemy allows you to create potions. Try to sell pills, as you can carry more pills than potions. You can also set up fusers in Crafting Town. New alchemists would fuse sneakers from the Henesys Market to gain EXP and sell the ones with potential for a few million mesos.
  3. Haggle. You can find new players selling their items for cheap prices. If there is a player who offers you an item for an expensive price, haggle with them. Say "Hi" when the trade window opens and say thanks when you finish trading. This will help you build your reputation as a merchant while getting the items you want. This also works with Gachapon winners too, however, you may annoy them.

Setting up your Store

  1. Find a spot in the FM. Channels two and three are the best spots to set a store. Channel one is better, but you may be disconnected by hackers. Pay attention to patches and get a spot first thing after it's finished.
  2. Sell spots. If you find a good spot in Channel one, sell it for five to twenty million. If you find a less busier spot, you can still make a profit, but sell it for cheaper prices.
  3. Choose a good name for your store. Choose one that actually describes the items that you're selling, such as "Empress Equipment" or "Cheap Mastery Books". Not a lot of people wants to buy from a store called "I like Pie" or "In Soviet Russia, Car drives You!".
  4. Advertise. You can smega (super megaphone) a message about your store. You can buy those in the Cash Shop, the cheapest one being 400 NX for a Skull Megaphone (red border, no icon in top right corner. Some smegas sell for over 2,500 NX (Super Megaphone, your avatar in top right corner, plus an advert on Maple TV (the tv in most cities that talks about things such as the Big Bang patch, Friend Finders, and losing EXP) Remember to put the channel and FM in your ad, or your customers can't find your shop. If you want your ad to be super effective, say something interesting or attention attracting, but don't lie and claim the items in your shop are one meso or you risk annoying customers. You may sell out fast, or go as far to making a marketplace.

Tips

  • Join a merchanting guild so you can gain some profit and make friends with new merchants.
  • As of v.107, there is a new system called the "Alien Socket System", where you can enhance your equipment using "sockets" and "Nebulite" in addition to potential and equipment enhancement. However, make sure you actually want to add Nebulite to your equipment, because if you want to change the Nebulite, you need to pay 1000 Nexon cash for a "Nebulite Diffuser". You can also pay 800 Nexon cash for a Nebulite Gachapon ticket, if you're lucky, you may get A ranked Nebulites.
  • You can also sell cash shop items in GMS too. Most 30 day items sells for twenty million, while a permanent item (ex. Surprise Style exclusive items) can sell for up to two billion. Exclusive Surprise Style Box items sell up to more.
  • You can do join expeditions for items (ex. Zakum Helmet) and scroll them using Legendary Spirit. Some items from expeditions can sell for a few hundred million mesos because people aren't willing to join an expedition or use powerful scrolls on their items without destroying them.
  • Check websites like BasilMarket to find prices in your server.
  • Log in before the Hot Time Event. They generally give you items such as SP resets, a Storm Growth potion, a special hat (for new class releases) and a letter that gives you fame, but you get the chance to get rare items such as Angelic Blessings. There's also 2x EXP and Drop events during Hot Time!
  • If you don't have a store permit, you can merchant ores, plates, and gems in Crafting Town. Ores can sell up to one hundred thousand, and plates/gems can sell up to one million. You can also merchant scrolls in the Free Market, but it will be laggy if your computer isn't powerful enough.
  • Check your Crusader Codex to find out which monster drops what items, before you go training.
  • If you lose items and mesos due to a rollback or stability issues, you may get NX (The typical amount is 5000 MaplePoints) as a compromise and there may be a 2x EXP and Drop, mostly from 2:00- 4:00 in PST. Nexon may also give away other goodies depending on how severe the rollback was. This also happens if you got hacked and send a ticket to Nexon. Depending on the severity of the hacking, the amount of NX you will get will vary.
  • Before you go to school or to bed, get a part time job for up to 3 of your characters. For 6 hours, your character will "work" on the job and after 6 hours, visit Ms. Appropriation in every major town for your reward. Rewards include buffs and EXP (Rest), herbs and Alchemy recipes (Herbalism), ores and equipment recipes (Mining), potions and scrolls (General Store), and potions and equipments (General Store).
  • Zinyden, the MapleStory community manager (@MapleStory) has a Twitter account and will tweet about the statuses of maintenance, events, and alert people about different events. If you're one of those merchants who wants to grab a spot immediately, follow him. You can also ask him questions about it and he may respond.
  • Leprechauns in NLC drop around one to two thousand and you may have a chance for it to drop Steelys that you can sell for one to four million. Also, Wolf Spiders have a chance to drop ibis. You can also hunt Master Death Teddies for Angelic Blessing Ring Recipes.

Warnings

  • Some merchanting guilds had been known for harassing players to tag them in their stores, with the threat of disconnect hacking. Be wary if a player says, "Tag (guild name) or we will DC you". To reduce chances of that, shut of your whispers when selling items.
  • Prices in the FM can deflate. Be wary when buying expensive chairs and anything over one hundred million.
  • Be careful when selling items to players with a reputation for duplicating items. You may make millions of mesos after trading, but your sold item may be duplicated, therefore ruining the economy.
  • In GMS and KMS, there is a system where monsters won't drop items or mesos when you are twenty or more levels above that monster's level. You can bypass that by making a mule, and before you level up, kill your character.
  • Never buy NX with mesos. You may get scammed and banned for cash trade.
  • *Do not buy duplicated items (ex. those 301 attack Red Cravens you see on smegas). Nexon has been alerted about this issue and is currently replacing them with clean versions of those items. They will not refund you your mesos or NX.

Things You'll Need

  • At least 1,800 NX. The NX can be credit (bought from the Nexon website), prepaid (bought using Karma Koins), or Maple Points (given during events).
  • A Nexon ID. This can be made on the Nexon website.
  • MapleStory, Nexon Installer, or GameLauncher. Using GameLauncher is strongly recommended because people have been hacked from using the website.
