Convert an RTF File into MS Word Document

A rich-text formatted (RTF) document is a file format that is supported by most processors on almost any operating system, but is restricted compared to Word documents. If you want to add pictures or charts or any other media elements to your RTF document, you'll need to convert it to Microsoft Word's DOC format. See Step 1 below to learn how.

Steps

Using Word

  1. Open the file with Word.
    • You can either use Word to open the RTF file.
    • Or you can open Word first and then open the RTF file using the Open menu option.
  2. Click File. Select "Save as" from the the File menu or tab. This will open the "Save as" dialog box.
  3. Change the format. Click the dropdown menu labeled "Save as type" and select "Word Document" (for Word 2007-2013), or Word 97-2003 Document for compatibility with older versions.
  4. Save the file. A copy of the file will be made as the Word format that you specified. The original will still be in the same location in the original RTF format.

Using a Conversion Service

  1. Find a conversion service. There are a variety of free services available that will convert your RTF files to Word format. There are also programs available for download, though you should ensure that you only download from trusted locations.
    • If you have a lot of files to convert, you may want to download a program that allows you to run batch conversions.
  2. Upload your file(s). Some sites only allow you to upload one file at a time, while others allow you to upload multiple files at once. Some services require you to enter your email in order to receive the converted file as an attachment.
  3. Download your converted files. Once the RTF document has been converted into DOC format, you can download it using the links that the conversion service provides.

Warnings

  • While Word-format is sometimes easier to use and allows you to use all the features available in MS Word, rich-text format is much more universal and accepted by all word processors. Word-format is only accepted by a handful of other word processors and formatting may change from program to program.
