Convince Your Parents to Buy You a More Expensive Cellphone

Everybody longs for a little luxury in their lives. If you want the full blowout - camera, WAP, Bluetooth, etc. - but you have literally no money, it can be hard to make parents sway to your way of thinking, so you can try persuade them using these steps.

Steps

  1. Take good care of your current mobile phone. This is to show to your parents how responsible you really are. They may not feel comfortable buying a new expensive phone with the knowledge that, for example you accidentally drop and crack the screen, so make an effort polishing the screen and recharging the battery regularly - if possible, in front of your parents.
  2. Be well-informed. Look into the product you intend to buy and evaluate if it really is value for money. Although your parents may not seem like technological wizards, they can probably tell a rip-off from a real bargain. Also, your parents can be well-assured that you know what you want, and you won't just abandon the phone within a few weeks.
  3. Consider the consequences of your purchase. What will happen to your old phone? Make sure you don't carelessly disregard this and carefully plan out where it will go and tell your parents your plans when you come face-to-face to confront them. If you have a younger sibling, suggest that the phone gets handed down to them - it would be a win-win situation. If you do not have siblings, consider sending your phone to be recycled - go to your local council's website, which may have information about this. Some stores have a trade-in; where you can trade in your phone for vouchers to spend on a new one, this option may be quite convincing.
  4. Now that you're fully set, it's time to ask your parents. Be polite. Be mature. Make sure you've been on your best behavior prior to this event. Drive a good deal - promise you won't spend more credit than, say, $/£5 a month and explain your intentions clearly. Try not to make your presentation too long, make it direct to the point and then give reasons why you think you deserve a new cell phone. This isn't the only thing that is bothering children, it is also bothering the parents.

Tips

  • Get good grades. It will make your parents happy and prove to them that you are responsible.
  • Don't ever complain about the phone you already have, it just gets them 10x angrier.
  • You could say, e.g. 'I'll pay $100, and you can pay $100' Parents like this much more, as it shows that you know that mobile phones aren't cheap and they don't have to pay as much.
  • If your phone contract is coming to an end then drop little hints about getting a new phone when the contract ends. When your contract does end then tell them you "need" a new phone because the contract is over you can tell them that your company give discounts to people who have had it with a full contract.
  • Offer to do something for them, such as washing their car, walking the dog, getting outside more, or quitting video games. They will like it if you do those things with out them asking you to do it.
  • If your parents simply won't budge, then get a job or earn money in some way or say you will help around the house more- tell them what you're willing to do. If you aren't old enough to be employed yet you could also ask for an allowance if you don't already have one. You could even ask for a raise in allowance, save up, and buy the phone yourself with their help with the bill.
  • If you get pocket money, then save up half the money the phone costs, then ask your parents if they can pay the other half. If you already have half the money, your parents might be more inclined to pay the other half.
  • Negotiate, in example, pay for half the price and for your phone bills; this will make you look mature and responsible.
  • When you ask them for a newer updated phone and your parents say no the first time don't start whining, acting childish, or keep asking them every 5 minutes. They will no think you are old enough to have one and won't think you deserve it.
  • Don't beg and cry for a new phone. Your parents will think you are not ready or mature yet.
  • When you do ask give them some backup information e.g. why you need a new phone and don't say something like because all my friends have one. Chances are they won't get it for you if you say that.
  • Always find your parents when they are in a good mood. Asking your parents when they are in a bad mood will increase their chances of saying no.
  • If your parents say no, do not bug them and plead. Try to clean, do chores, ect. Work for what you want and eventually, you might get it!
  • Take care of your old phone and say that you like having the responsibility of a phone.
  • If you can, wait for a new model of the same phone to come out. Chances are the prices for the phone that you want will go down.
  • If you just got your phone but after a couple of months want to update then just let them know that you like your phone, but on the new phone it could have, for example, more room for photos. This shows that you are creative and aren't just in it for the games. Let them know if you're embarrassed, or the reason why you don't want your phone.

Warnings

  • Don't ask every day. Chances are you'll never get it.
  • If your parents refuse, don't whine or beg. Your parents will think you're too immature for the possession of a new phone and any chance of a change of decision will be eliminated. If a holiday is coming up soon put it on your Christmas list but put it at the top or bottom of the list and do not make it stand out.
