Deliver a Pizza

You can make decent money delivering pizzas if you know what you are doing. Most people do their own thing while delivering pizzas, but there are a few guidelines that should be followed.

Steps

  1. Look up the street address for the order you are delivering. Find the location on a map.
  2. Place the pizza in a heated delivery bag and secure it in your reliable vehicle.
  3. Drive safely to the designated location.
  4. Walk up to the door and ring the doorbell or knock audibly. Greet the customer and hand them the bill. Accept their money, a signed check, or credit card slip and then hand them the pizza. Make sure to bring a pen to allow them to sign the slip if they pay by credit card.
  5. Give them their change back, if necessary. Thank them and wish them a good day. Typically, drivers round up the price of the order in order not to give coin change back. Ex: $31.89 turns into $32 or $45.01 turns into $46. Don't mix up your tips with the payment.
  6. Place the form of payment in a pocket, and make sure everything is organized.

Tips

  • Finding house numbers is often the hardest part. Usually all odd house numbers are on one side and all even numbers on the other. Any house number you see on the final street should let you know which side the house will be on.
  • When delivering credit card orders, it is a good idea to have a pen on hand.
  • Keeping everything organized makes closing at the end of the night fast and easy.
  • Always smile and be friendly. Your politeness may determine your tip.
  • Drive safely. Always buckle up.
  • You should be kind, but it's best not to strike up a conversation. Just welcome the customer, hand them the pizza, give them the bill, receive the money, and then leave.
  • In most places, house numbers will go up (or down) by one hundred every block, counting from some central street. So if you're delivering to 801 Main St., and you see 525 Main St., you know it's another three blocks, and probably the first house of that block on the same side (odd number).
  • A GPS can also help you find the address you're looking for, Garmin is a good option. However all types occasionally have trouble with address numbers, so it would be best to make sure you're going to the right house number before walking in.
  • Always have proper change.
  • Greetings and goodbyes may vary from house to house.

Warnings

  • Malicious people may order a pizza just to harm or mug the person delivering it. After each delivery be sure to go back to the pizza place and store the cash you are given. You may be mugged at the door of a customer if you have money in your pocket.
  • Beware of prank callers!
  • Be careful when it comes to delivering late-night. Due to the unusual hours, this may affect your social life. If you want a delivery job, it is best to try to find day or evening shifts.
  • Being a pizza-delivery person is one of the most dangerous jobs. In the United States, it is in the top ten most dangerous jobs listing (listed as "Driver"). The job is categorized as dangerous due to the fact that many pizza restaurants force their pizza deliverers to deliver pizza to dangerous neighborhoods.
  • Not everyone will be happy with their service. This is normal, but remember the customer is always right. In the event of an unsatisfied customer, apologize and offer to fix the problem somehow.
