Draw a Manga Cat

You have your manga character, and now you need a sidekick. What about a cat? Cats can be cute and are very smart. You can even make your cat have special powers, such as flying. A cat sidekick is the perfect thing to finish your manga character. These instructions show how to make the cat sitting down, but by manipulating the structure, you can put your cat in any position. Let's begin!

Steps

  1. Cats come in different shapes and sizes, but they share the same body structure. You can draw different types of cats by changing the size and length of these parts.
  2. Start by sketching the wireframe of the cat's body.
  3. Sketch the basic shapes needed to build the cat's figure.
  4. Sketch the details for the face, fur and body.
  5. Refine the sketch using a smaller tipped drawing tool.
  6. Draw the outline over the sketch.
  7. Erase and remove the sketch marks and add color.

Tips

  • This cat can easily look very happy, just make the eyes tall ovals with pupils and irises, and a small, shaded in mouth.
  • Don't worry too much about the eyes. Remember, this is a cat, not a human. All you really need is a shine spot to indicate where the cat is looking; the rest can be black pupil.
  • When you draw the fur, don't worry about covering the entire body in fur. This will give your cat a darker look, and even make it look raggedy. Just add fur to the outline of the body to give the impression of fur all over.
  • A good example is Yoruichi, from Tite Kubo's Bleach series. I wouldn't recommend Google imaging it because those are pictures of her in her human form. When you actually read/watch Bleach, you can see her cat form.

Warnings

  • Don't be disappointed if your first try isn't perfect. Like everything, it takes lots of practice!
  • Be sure to draw lightly at first to make cleaning up and fixing mistakes easier.
