Make Parrot Bread

Let's say you own a pet bird (or know someone who does) and enjoy baking. Or maybe you want to make a delectable treat for a parrot or two in your life. How about you want to make something healthy for a feathered friend? If any of these statements apply to you, you should definitely make Parrot Bread! It's easy to make, nutritious, and birds go crazy over it! Read on to find out how to make this delicacy!

Ingredients

  • 1 package boxed cornbread mix (alternatively, make your own- just skip the salt)
  • 1 cup flour (any flour will work, just make sure it is ground fine enough for your bird to eat without difficulty)
  • 1 stalk of celery
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 jar sweet potato baby food
  • 1 apple
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons of oil (unsalted butter would also work)
  • 1/3 cup yogurt mixed with approximately 1 teaspoon water (substitute for milk in cornbread mix).

Steps

  1. Dice celery and apples into small pieces and grate carrots.
  2. Mix together cornbread mix and flour, then stir in yogurt (plain), baby food, eggs, and {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} oil or melted butter. Stir just until everything is blended.
  3. Add chopped veggies and fruit.
  4. Bake in {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} square pan sprayed lightly with cooking oil, 25-30 minutes at 400F. It should be lightly browned on top, and toothpick should come out clean from center.
  5. Cut into 2" squares. Keep out enough for a few days, then freeze the rest for later consumption.

Tips

  • Add in 1/3 cup small, organic bird pellets (like Harrison's Fine) for extra nutrition.
  • Batter should be thick, but not sticky like dough.
  • itty-bitty-birdie-bites' Fine Flours (Multigrain, Bean'n'Rice, Popcorn Meal, and TexMex - all organic!) are a great alternative to plain flour, and Add 'Ems (Veggie Extravaganza, Fruit'n'Nut, Sensational Southwest Spice, and Extreme Green) allow you to add natural nutrition and flavor...and they come with a pan and instructions!
  • Substitute in any kind of fruit or veggie for variety. Bell pepper plus hot red pepper flakes makes a nice "southwest" version for birds that like it hot.
  • Just a dab of peanut-butter is good to add also.
  • Making your own cornbread from scratch is a good idea, that way you can control the salt which is not good for birds.
  • For easy freezing/thawing, put extra squares in individual small baggies, then place them all in a large Ziplock bag for freezing.
  • Parrots love it slightly warm, so try microwaving it for 10-15 seconds before serving it.

Warnings

  • Do not put too much butter, as that can be fattening.
  • Do not put any pits, or the area around the pits in the apple.Pits can have very toxic cyanide.
