Make Your iPod Go Faster
This will make your iPod load music, photos, videos, etc. faster by defragging its hard disk using the Windows Disk Defragmenter.
Steps
- While iPod is connected, go to iTunes and select your iPod in the sidebar on the left. Then in the right panel, scroll down and make sure "Enable disk use" is checked under "Options."
- Go to My Computer.
- There should be an icon named after your iPod. Right click this icon and select "Properties."
- Click the "Tools" tab in the window that pops up, and then click "Defragment Now."
- You will get another window. This is the windows disk defragmenter utility. Click on the "Defragment" button in the bottom of the window.
- This may take a while, and will make your computer go slow. It's best not to bother it, so go out and read a book or take a nap or something.
- When it's finished, your iPod will now access everything and start up faster.
Tips
- It's a good idea to do this if you have just loaded/deleted lots of files to/from your iPod.
- You probably don't need to do this if you don't have a lot of files on your iPod.
- Go to Settings>General>Spotlight Search and then un-check all the items in there. This is making it so your ipod isn't doing more than one thing at once.
- If you have a copy of all the music on your iPod, you can use the Restore function (from iTunes) and reload all your music from scratch. This will ensure the data is written sequentially, one song after the other with no gaps in between files.
Warnings
- Never unplug your iPod while doing this. It can render the files in it unusable and need restoration.
- Your iPod may get very warm while defragging. To avoid overheating, it may be best to remove it from its case before beginning.
- Your iPod needs to have at least 15% of free space before you do this.
- Restoring the iPod will completely erase its hard drive including your preferences, music and any saved files (if you use it for storage).
- Defragmenting iPods can be a long process. For example, on a 30GB iPod video, it can take almost 3 hours. It depends on the speed of the internal hard disk of the iPod, and how full it is.
- This will not work on an iPod Nano or another flash based iPod like a Shuffle or iPod Touch/iPhone.
Things You'll Need
- Windows computer (or Mac if you are using the Restore method)
- iPod (any version with a hard drive)
- iTunes
- iPod USB or firewire cable
