Use an iPod As a Flash Drive

Make your iPod into a flash drive. NOTE: Only Mini, Nano and Shuffle function as Flash Drive, other iPod's have hard drives so they function like External Hard Drives, this has difference in speed, flash drives are faster.

Steps

  1. Connect it to your computer.
  2. Open iTunes and go to The ipod Information section.
  3. Uncheck everything and except Enable Disk use.
  4. Alternatively, the iPod can be forced into disk mode with the following steps:
  5. Hold down the menu button and the centre button for about 5 seconds. This reboots the iPod.
  6. Just after your iPod has rebooted, before the apple logo appears, hold down the centre button and the play/pause button for about 2 seconds. Your ipod will boot with a white screen with a black tick in the middle, and a title bar at the top saying Disk Mode, with the battery.
  7. The iPod can then be connected to a computer with a data cable, and will appear as a removable disk.
  8. To take the iPod out of disk mode, reboot it again as in step 1. The data will still be kept on the iPod
  9. This should work with all iPods, hard disk or otherwise (though hard disk based ipods will still be slower).

Tips

  • For the sole purpose of disk space, it's just best to buy a flash drive because they're only about $15 for 8 Gigabytes.
  • Make sure it's your iPod.
  • If you have a new iPod, you will need to reformat your old ipod so it is recognized, It WILL Conflict, its just best to make a new temp, account on your computer if possible, enable it, then delete that temp account.

Warnings

  • You will need to take your USB/Firewire cable with you everywhere to connect it.
