Make a Daiquiri

This is not "how to make a frozen or strawberry daiquiri." This is how to make an original daiquiri as it was meant to be enjoyed. Don't get me wrong. Strawberry daiquiri's are great but many people have never had a true daiquiri, and that's the point to this article. Make it and see for yourself!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of ice
  • 2 fl oz (60 mL) light rum
  • 1 fl oz (30 mL) fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 fl oz (15 mL) simple syrup

Steps

  1. Make sure to chill your martini glass first. Some people like to fill it with ice and soda water. The soda water removes any oils and dirt that may be lingering on your glass. It also helps the ice chill the glass faster. Move your Martini glass to the side for the time being. It will be sufficiently chilled by the time you are ready to use it.
  2. Add 2 cups of ice, 2 oz of light rum, 1oz of lime juice (fresh is always best), and 1/2 oz of simple syrup to a cocktail shaker and cover. Depending on the style of shaker you have, you can cover it with either the cover that came with it or just use a 16 oz glass to cover it.
  3. Shake well. Shake either 10 times or until water condensates on the outside of the shaker. Rum doesn't bruise the way gin does, so don't worry about shaking it too much. However, you don't want to melt all the ice into the drink, so 10 times should be enough.
  4. Discard the soda water and ice in the Martini glass.
  5. Strain the contents of the shaker into the Martini glass with either a Hawthorn Strainer and the Julep Strainer. Many people prefer a Julep strainer because it's less complicated than a Hawthorn strainer. Both have their merits!
  6. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Tips

  • It is advisable not to garnish with a strawberry, because this may give the drinker the idea that it's supposed to be a strawberry daiquiri and would be sorely mistaken and disappointed when they taste it.
  • To make simple syrup, simmer 2 parts sugar with 1 part water until all the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Store in an airtight container in the fridge. Better yet, try to find a bottle of Sirop de Sucre de Canne. Some of the fine rum distilleries, such as Trois Rivieres from Martinique, still bottle this confection.
  • Experiment with the amount of lime juice and simple syrup you use. You may enjoy a stronger daiquiri or a sweeter one or a more sour drink.
  • You may garnish this drink with a multitude of things. The most obvious would be a lime wedge, wheel, or spiral.

Warnings

  • Drink responsibly!
