Make a Gate in Minecraft

In Minecraft, a gate (aka a fence gate) is used for access to and from fences. Making a gate is simple, just follow these steps.

Steps

Sourcing Materials

  1. Get four wooden planks. This can be done by getting one wooden log and placing it in your crafting table.
  2. Craft two wooden planks into sticks. This can be done by putting one plank at the base of the crafting table and one above it.

Crafting the Gate

  1. Place one wooden plank in the center slot. Place the other wooden plank directly beneath it or above it.
  2. Place two sticks to the exact left of the planks. Place the other two sticks to the exact right.
  3. Shift click or drag to place the gate in your inventory.

Placing a Gate in a Fence

  1. Choose where you want the gate to be positioned in the fence.
  2. Right click next to the fence while holding the gate. The gate will position itself in the location you've selected.
  3. To open a gate, simply right click on it and walk through. To shut, right click again. A gate can be opened both inwards and outwards.

Tips

  • Gates cannot be opened by villagers or knocked down by zombies.
  • If you'd like a chicken escape door, place a gate on a slab. Chickens will be able to pass underneath but not hostile mobs.
  • Gates can also be attached to cobblestone walls.
  • Gates need to have a solid block beneath them; they cannot be placed in mid-air.
