Make a Naval Warfare Travel Game

Battleship used to be a game played on a paper form. We recreate the game as a laminated card. A dry erase pen allows players to mark the position of their ships and plot shots. Great for travel.

Steps

  1. Open a graphics program such as MS Paint and size the window to {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} by {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}.
  2. In the upper section, create a 10 x 10 square grid with dark grey lines. Try to leave an inch of space along the sides.
  3. Label the rows on the left side of the grid A through J.
  4. Label the columns on the top of the grid 1-10.
  5. Copy the grid.
  6. Scroll to the bottom and paste in a second grid.
  7. Between the two grids, add a text box.
  8. Type the following into the text box:
    Aircraft Carrier - 5 squares
    Battleship 4 squares
    Destroyer 3 squares
    Frigate 2 squares
    Submarine 2 squares.
  9. Ensure everything is positioned neatly
  10. Label the top section "Attack Grid" and the bottom section "Defense Grid"
  11. Print two (2) copies on one piece of cardstock in landscape mode.
  12. Separate the two game boards and have them laminated.
  13. Add two dry erase markers.

Tips

  • When building the grid, it's easier to start with a good size square, then copy and paste another on the end until you have a row of ten. Then copy the row and paste a new row onto the bottom
  • Punch a hole in one corner of each laminated card and use a binder ring to keep them together. You can also thread a pencil case on to the binder ring to hold the dry erase markers.
  • You'll have more control over placement of grid boxes, letters and numbers if you zoom in

Things You'll Need

  • MS Paint or similar graphics program
  • cardstock
  • Two dry erase markers
