Replace a Handbrake on a Transit Connect
Steps
- Jack up and safely prop the van and chock the wheels. Put into second gear and release the hand brake. Check your chocks. Crawl under the van. Locate and remove the thin middle section of the aluminium heat guard from behind the exhaust pipe by undoing about six steel nuts. Pull away from the studs and slide the section back to expose where the handbrake cable connects to the rear brake cables. Do this by pulling forwards by about 100mm, to clear the still fixed back section, then pull it back over the top of the back section. A little bending is required.
- In the cab carefully remove the handbrake garter (it is easy to break the frame). Pull off the spade connector to brake light and completely remove the nut on the end of the brake cable.
- Get back under the van and pull the main brake cable back until its' end nipple clears the cradle holding the two rear cables.
- Back in the cab remove the handbrake angling it sideways to clear the edges of the hole. Reverse all procedures to fix the new handbrake.
