Ride Metro Transit Buses

Metro Transit is a bus service that covers King County in Washington state, which includes Seattle and surrounding cities such as Shoreline and Tukwila.

Steps

  1. Arrive at your bus stop several minutes early.
  2. When your bus arrives, make sure it is your route and going in the direction you want.
  3. If it is, step on the bus and insert fare or tap your ORCA card on the card reader. Exact fare is required.
  4. Wait until your stop.
  5. A couple blocks from your stop, pull the yellow cord along the bus to signal to the driver to stop at the next bus stop.
  6. When bus has stopped, get off your bus.

Tips

  • If you aren't sure the bus is going in the right direction towards your stop, ask the driver.
  • Get there about 5 minutes early.
  • Fare on Metro Transit buses varies depending on where you are going and the time of day. Base fare is $2.25 off-peak for all zones; peak fare is $2.50 for one zone and $3.00 for a two-zone fare—the Seattle city limits are the zone line. There are discounts available for seniors, people with disabilities, and Medicare card holders. As always, this is subject to change, so be sure to check the King County Metro Web site for fare information.
  • Make sure to check online for snow schedules and routes so you are not waiting for a bus that has been canceled in the freezing cold.
  • Always overestimate the time it will take to ride & walk (to and from) the bus. You'd be surprised!
  • Check the times at your bus stop so you won't be waiting too long.

Warnings

  • Don't be mean to the driver; they put up with a lot and will boot you off.
  • Do not drink or eat on bus.
  • Do not smoke on bus.
  • Do not be loud on the bus.
  • Do not try to get on board bus without paying—for that you will be charged with a misdemeanor and fined $180. (Check your local laws for more information)
  • Follow the Metro Transit Code of Conduct and ride right.

Things You'll Need

  • The fare or an ORCA card.
  • Proper clothing for different season
  • Entertainment if the bus is late (iPods are great!). Be sure to bring headphones or earbuds if you are bringing a music player or audible material such as a radio.
