Ride a Kick Scooter Safely in the Streets
Do you want to ride your scooter safely? This guide will help you stay safe while you are out and about on your scooter!
Steps
- Watch the road at all times. This is vitally important.
- Always have your hands on the handlebars, eyes on the road in front of you, and your foot near the brake.
- Practice your braking. This will help you brake suddenly if you see an object in the road.
- Beware of grates.
- Always wear a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist pads.
- Do not try to go off a curb.
- Do not try any stunts.
- Beware of pot holes. Again, keep your eyes on the road. If you see a pothole up ahead, gradually steer around it.
- Try to ride on the footpath that is provided so that you will not get hit by a car. Also, avoid hitting people and animals while you are on the footpath.
- If you must ride on the road, stay as close to the curb as possible and give way to oncoming cars. Remember, the road is for cars and motorbikes, not kick scooters.
- Learn how to safely jump or step off of your scooter if you lose control (this can often happen when riding downhill). Try your best to avoid doing this, but if you must, warn any people in the scooter's path and be sure to retrieve it. If possible, try stepping off the scooter but grip the handlebars so the scooter doesn't move.
Tips
- Riding your scooter with a friend is better than riding alone because if one of you has a serious accident, the other person can go get help.
- Wearing elbow and knee pads is a good idea in case you fall over or you crash into a stationary object.
- Avoid riding at night because it is hard for oncoming motorists to see you.
- If you can't get a friend, get an adult to help
