Save Your Message History on WhatsApp

This article teaches you how to back up all of your WhatsApp chats. If you ever have to reinstall WhatsApp, you'll be able to restore your chat history from the backup.

Steps

Using an iPhone

  1. Open WhatsApp. It's the green app with a white phone and chat bubble icon.
    • If this is your first time opening WhatsApp, you'll need to set up WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Settings. It's in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
    • If WhatsApp opens to a conversation, first tap the back button in the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. Tap Chats. This option is in the middle of the screen.
  4. Tap Chat Backup. You'll see this option in the middle of the "Chats" page.
  5. Tap Back Up Now. It's in the middle of the page. Doing so will prompt your iPhone to begin backing up your WhatsApp chats to iCloud. If you ever log into WhatsApp on another device with the same phone number as you're using now, you'll be able to recover your chats.
    • If you don't have iCloud Drive enabled, you'll need to Turn-on-iCloud-Drive-on-an-iPhone to continue.

Using Android

  1. Open WhatsApp. It's the green app with a white phone and chat bubble icon.
    • If this is your first time opening WhatsApp, you'll need to set up WhatsApp.
  2. Tap . This button is in the top-right corner of the screen.
    • If WhatsApp opens to a conversation, first tap the back button in the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. Tap Settings. It's at the bottom of the drop-down menu.
  4. Tap Chats. This option is in the middle of the "Settings" page.
  5. Tap Chat backup. It's toward the bottom of the screen.
  6. Tap BACK UP. It's the green button in the middle of the page. Doing so will back up your chat history to Google Drive. If you ever log into WhatsApp on another device with the same phone number as you're using now, you'll be able to recover your chats.

Tips

  • You may want to upgrade your iCloud or Google Drive storage first before backing up a huge chat log.

Warnings

  • If you send the chat history with media (e.g., photos) attached, it will be a larger file size and may take more time and data to send. If your phone has a message size restriction, it may truncate or fail to send your entire chat history.
  • Backing up over data may result in extra charges on your bill.
