Sign Up to Race Dirt Bikes

Riding dirt bikes is extremely fun, and some people enjoy racing them! It can be confusing for new people to sign up for racing dirt bikes. This How to article will help you get started with the process to sign up to race dirt bikes, considering you already own a dirt bike.

Steps

  1. Purchase proper safety gear. This includes a helmet, boots, gloves, jersey, and pants. Some websites can personalize your jersey with your name and racing number. Options will be available such as name, number, color, and font. Most of the time, motocross numbers are dependent on memberships. (refer to step 2)
  2. Look at your local motocross track's website or social media page. Learn what is required to race dirt bikes at their facility. Some facilities require an AMA (American Motorcycle Association) membership which will assign you a racing number, but it is optional to be an AMA member at some tracks. Most facilities require you to sign up for races online using the Race Ready website/ app. (https://app.iraceready.com/events)
  3. Purchase an AMA membership if required to do so. (If not, this step can be skipped.) If the motocross track is a sanctioned track, you will need to be in your sanction of the AMA. For example, District 14 for Michigan riders. This will allow you to race at multiple tracks and gain points for the racing season. Find this sanctioning on the AMA website. (https://americanmotorcyclist.com/) You will receive a card similar to the one pictured.
  4. Download the local track or AMA rulebook. Ensure that you understand all rules and learn what racing class you are eligible to sign up for.
  5. Find an event near you. Facebook, or any other social platforms provide great ways to find new tracks. Sign up on Race Ready if that event uses that technology. If not, this can be done in person at the track. Race Ready also provides insurance coverage that is optional to purchase.
  6. Travel to the track early on race day or before if you intend to camp. Most facilities charge for camping, but no more than $50.00 for a night.
  7. Check into your races. If you signed up using Race Ready, check in so they know you are racing. Purchase a live timing sticker from the facility if using Race Ready.
  8. Obtain a race schedule for the day from the facility. This will tell you when your races are, and always listen to the public announcement system. This will tell you what classes are at the starting gate and what classes are in staging.
  9. Slowly ride to the starting gate when your class is in staging. You are now ready to race.
