Get the TI 83 on Your Computer

Want to leave that bulky old TI-83 calculator on your desk? You can run a TI-83 emulator on Windows, Mac, and Android that functions just like the real calculator, except faster. That's because the emulator is using the actual TI-83 code in the form of a ROM file. You can have your calculator replacement up and running in just a couple minutes.

Steps

Windows and Mac

  1. Download Wabbitemu. This is one of the newest and most powerful TI-83 emulators available, and can run on Windows, OS X, and Android.
    • You can download Wabbitemu for free from the developer's CodePlex page (wabbit.codeplex.com) as part of the WabbitStudio software package.

  2. Download a TI-83 ROM file. A ROM is a file that contains the system image of the calculator. The Wabbitemu program does not come with a ROM for legal reasons. You can follow the prompts in the Wabbitemu setup program to create your own ROM from your own TI-83, or you can download one from a variety of locations online.
    • To find a TI-83 ROM online, simply search Google for "ti-83 rom" and select a result. Avoid sites that are laden with advertisements or that ask you to download extra files or programs. The ROM file will have a .rom extension.
  3. Run the Wabbitemu program. Wabbitemu doesn't install, it simply runs from the downloaded file. You will be prompted to choose the ROM file you downloaded or create your own ROM.
    • If you downloaded a ROM file, click Browse... and select it.
    • If you need to create your own ROM file, follow the prompts in the Wabbitemu program to create one. This will involve running a program on your TI-83 calculator to create the image file.
  4. Click ViewEnable Skin. This will display the calculator and the LCD display.
  5. Use the calculator. You can now use the virtual TI-83 just Use-a-TI-83-Plus-Graphing-Calculator. All of the virtual buttons perform the same functions as their real-world counterparts, and the emulator will actually process things much faster than your old calculator.

Android

  1. Open the Google Play Store. You can download the TI-83 emulator for free on your Android device.
    • In order to download a TI-83 emulator on an iOS device, you'll need to Jailbreak-an-iPhone.
  2. Search for and install Wabbitemu. The Wabbitemu emulator app is available for free.
  3. Download a ROM file. A ROM is a file that contains the system image of the calculator. The Wabbitemu app does not come with a ROM for legal reasons. You can download one from a variety of locations online.
    • To find a TI-83 ROM online, simply search Google on your device for "ti-83 rom" and select a result. Avoid sites that are laden with advertisements or that ask you to download extra files or programs. The ROM file will have a .rom extension.
  4. Run Wabbitemu. Select "I already have a ROM file".
  5. Select your ROM file. If you downloaded it on your device, it should be detected automatically. If you transferred it from your computer and placed it somewhere non-standard, you will have to browse for it.
  6. Start using the calculator You can now use the virtual TI-83 just Use-a-TI-83-Plus-Graphing-Calculator. All of the virtual buttons perform the same functions as their real-world counterparts, and the emulator will actually process things much faster than your old calculator.
  7. Turn off the vibrations. If you don't want your device to vibrate every time you press a button, you can disable it in the Settings.
    • Swipe in from the left side of the screen.
    • Tap "Settings".
    • Uncheck "Vibrate on keypress".
