Put Games on Your TI 83/84 Graphing Calculator

A TI 83/84 can be your best friend when it comes to Pre-Calculus and Calculus. But, it can also be your best friend in those boring moments in life. How can this be? You can put games on your TI 83/84 to kill time, or to just have fun.

Steps

  1. Connect your calculator to your computer. You will need a USB cable that corresponds with your calculator to do this. Usually, the store where you bought the calculator will sell these, or you can find one online. The USB cable costs around $20. You will also need the program TI-Connect. Download the one that matches your calculator. Make sure you put a shortcut of it on your desktop.
  2. Download the games you want onto your computer. You may need to unzip the file and you should probably move it to a permanent folder on your computer instead of temp.
  3. Drag the file onto the TI-Connect shortcut. In a few seconds, it should transfer the program onto you calculator. You can see all of the files on your calculator by opening the device explorer.
  4. Hit the program button on your calculator and play the game. If it doesn't work, see the tips.

Tips

  • If your game doesn't work, refer to the read me that came downloaded with the game. Usually, there will be a way to contact the person who made the game with your questions. You may need to install a shell, such as ION, or MirageOS to run the game. Or, the game might not be compatible with your calculator.
  • If your friends have games on their calculator, you can transmit them to yours using the "Link" function and the small black cord that comes with it when you purchase it. Sometimes, the game had bugs though when you get them this way, so it is best to get them directly from your computer.
  • Most games need a shell, and the most popular is MirageOS.
  • Check out the Sources and Citations for more information and sites you can get games from.
  • Try different games. You can always put new ones on if you get tired of one.

Warnings

  • Don't play games when you should be doing work, as it may be breaking honor code violations depending on the area. However this does not apply in all areas meaning that it is perfectly acceptable in instances where you are finished with your work or already know the content being covered. It is good to relieve a little stress while at school, but you should know your limits.
  • It's your choice on buying the cable. Some people find having games on your calculator is almost as useless as having games on your cellphone; you only play it once, then stop.
