Turn off an iPhone
Your iPhone will conserve battery power while it is in Sleep mode, but if you’re not planning on using it for a while you can really conserve your battery life by turning your iPhone off completely. Follow this guide to turn off your iPhone, even if it is not responding. These steps work with iPads and iPod Touches as well.
Steps
- Press and hold the Power button. This is on the top of your device, towards the right corner. Hold it down until you see a red slider. You can use the Power button while on any screen, even if the phone is locked.
- Drag the red slider to turn it off. After holding the Power button for a few moments, the red Power slider will appear. Use your finger to swipe it to the right. Wait a short while for the device to power down. The time this takes varies by device.
- Turn on your iPhone when you're ready. Once the phone has been turned off, you can turn it on again by holding down the Power button until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset your iPhone when necessary. If your iPhone is unresponsive, and the Power slider is not appearing, you will need to reset your iPhone. Press and hold the Power and Home buttons together until the Apple logo appears. This means that your device has been reset, and should power down normally next time you try.
- If your device is still unresponsive, you may have to use iTunes to restore it.
