What was Ziggurat?

Mesopotamians built several temples named as Ziggurat. This Ziggurat was an artificial mountain on which, according to the people's thought, the local god lived and watched the citizens to protect them. The Ziggurat platform of Earth was faced with bricks and temples were built on these platforms. These Ziggurats were decorated with statues of several gods.

They were also used as observatories by astrologers and, sometimes, also acted as the centre of trade. The white temple in Uruk, which was built in 3000 B.C., was made up of white washed brick set on top of a pyramid of Ziggurat. The hanging gardens of Babylon, which are considered to be one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, were also probably built in the same way.
