What was the role of religion in the Mesopotamian society?

Religion was the most dominant factor in the Mesopotamian society. People worshipped many gods and goddesses like the gods of the sky, the air, the sun, the moon, fertility and wisdom. Some famous gods were, Enlil, Marduk, Ishtar etc.
