Avoid Distractions (Teenagers)
At one point or another we've all let our eyes wander around, started doodling in our notebooks, or got stuck scrolling social media. This can be frustrating, as if this happens often, then your homework or schoolwork might not be completed in time. However, there are ways you can focus better on what you're doing. This wikiHow will show you how you can concentrate without losing too much focus to distractions around you.
Steps
- Give yourself breaks to refocus. You may become far more distracted if you just try to do things for long periods of time. Taking a short break every 30 minutes can help you get more done, since you won't get as distracted if you've already had a break.
- Turn off your device. Your phone is likely going to distract you if you hear a notification or just see it lying around. You can turn the notifications off, or just turn it off, and place it in a drawer to prevent this from happening.
- Study in an environment free of distractions. If there is stuff all around your room which is likely to make you lose your focus, then you might want to find a better place to do your homework.
- Try doing your homework in a family room, such as the dining room or living room. You probably won't want to scroll social media in front of the others in your household, so these can be effective places to get things done.
- Do your work in a public area like a library, study group or cafe. Having other people around can make you feel more inclined to get your work done.
- Put some music on. Music can distract you, but it doesn't have only be a distraction! Music without words is often better for concentrating, so you could try different genres which are known to be good for studying.
- You could create a playlist of songs for studying, especially if most of your music you usually listen to would distract you.
- Genres like lofi and classical are often better for working, so you can give these a try if you think it might help.
- Write a to do list. A to do list can help you have an idea of what you should be getting done, and when, so you don't get distracted by things you don't need to do.
- If you don't have a to do list, you might accidentally get work done on something you don't even need to complete until much later, instead of focusing on what may be due the next day.
Tips
- Don't be too harsh on yourself! Everyone gets distracted sometimes, and as long as you can get back on track, you won't get in trouble.
