Draw a Straight Line Without a Ruler

Have you ever wished you could draw a perfectly straight line with no ruler? Well, now you can do it using the following steps.

Steps

  1. Draw a dot on your paper with a pen or pencil where you wish the line to begin.
  2. Draw another dot on your paper where you wish the line to end.
  3. Now, place your pen or pencil at the beginning dot. This is where your line will begin.
  4. Now, focus your eyes on the ending dot...don't stop looking at that dot!
  5. Keeping your eyes focused on that ending dot, using your pen or pencil, begin drawing the line until it reaches the ending dot. Remember...don't take your eyes off of that ending dot!
  6. You just drew a straight line without using a ruler.

Tips

  • If your line is still a little crooked, don't give up! This method definitely works with a little practice.
  • It is also easier to turn the paper diagonally; in that position, you will be drawing the line diagonally. (When you put the paper back in a straight position, the line would then appear to be a horizontal or vertical line, if that is your intended position.) It will turn out to be easier as your hand will be in a better suited angle to the paper.
  • Also for longer lines draw dots in between to the dots. Then do the segments one by one. This will make it much easier.

Things You'll Need

  • A writing instrument, such as a pen or pencil
  • A piece of paper
