Make Floating Hearts from Plastic Straws
To make a creative little accessory for a drink, you can join two bending drinking straws into a heart that floats at the surface of a drink. This can also be a nifty way to give someone a ring, such as when proposing!
Steps
- Stretch two straws so that the bending part is elongated.
- Cut off the short ends of the straws to about half an inch (1 or 2 cm).
- Hold the cut ends together with pliers and seal them together with a flame.
- Cut the other ends of the straws to about 2 inches (5 cm) depending on how "tall" you want the heart to be.
- Bend the straws in the opposite direction, as shown.
- Hold the ends together with pliers and seal them together with a flame.
- Put the heart in a drink and, if you want, tie a ring to it with a piece of string so that when someone lifts out the heart, they find it! The heart is complete!
Tips
- When you glue the ends with a flame, make sure it is completely sealed so that when the heart is submerged in liquid, water does not get into the straws. If it does, the heart will sink!
Warnings
- Since it is being used for drinking, make sure it is clean.
- Be careful when using the flame. Do not burn your fingers!
- Don't smoke! Near the base of the flame the temperature is higher, and you will make less smoke. Don't melt the straws too much.
Things You'll Need
- 2 flexible straws
- Scissors
- Radio pliers or needle-nose pliers
- Lighter or flame source
