Make Floating Hearts from Plastic Straws

To make a creative little accessory for a drink, you can join two bending drinking straws into a heart that floats at the surface of a drink. This can also be a nifty way to give someone a ring, such as when proposing!

Steps

  1. Stretch two straws so that the bending part is elongated.
  2. Cut off the short ends of the straws to about half an inch (1 or 2 cm).
  3. Hold the cut ends together with pliers and seal them together with a flame.
  4. Cut the other ends of the straws to about 2 inches (5 cm) depending on how "tall" you want the heart to be.
  5. Bend the straws in the opposite direction, as shown.
  6. Hold the ends together with pliers and seal them together with a flame.
  7. Put the heart in a drink and, if you want, tie a ring to it with a piece of string so that when someone lifts out the heart, they find it! The heart is complete!

Tips

  • When you glue the ends with a flame, make sure it is completely sealed so that when the heart is submerged in liquid, water does not get into the straws. If it does, the heart will sink!

Warnings

  • Since it is being used for drinking, make sure it is clean.
  • Be careful when using the flame. Do not burn your fingers!
  • Don't smoke! Near the base of the flame the temperature is higher, and you will make less smoke. Don't melt the straws too much.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 flexible straws
  • Scissors
  • Radio pliers or needle-nose pliers
  • Lighter or flame source
